SUTTER COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS JOB TITLE Teacher of Austism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) DEFINITION Under the direction of a principal, to provide an education program for individuals with exceptional needs who require intensive instruction and training in programs serving pupils with autism or autistic-like behaviors that may include but not limited to the inability to use oral language for appropriate communications, history of extreme withdrawal, continued impairment in social interaction from infancy through early childhood, extreme preoccupationwith objects or inappropriate uses of objects or both, extreme resistance to control, and self-simulating ritualistic behavior.
DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO Principal, Special Education and general supervision of the Director of Special Education. SUPERVISION OVER Trains and assigns the work of instructional support staff and provides input into performance evaluation process. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Any one position may not include all of the listed duties, nor do all of the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions within this classification.)
Individualized Education Program Process Conducts assessment/evaluation of student abilities and needs; attends and serves as a member of the IEP Team to determine eligibility of students for program; assists in the development of IEP instructional goals/objectives; assists in identifying other related services for the student; reassesses/evaluates student progress and submits reports in a timely manner to coincide with IEP review meetings.
Provide information to children and/or their parents about the Medi-Cal system and where and how to access applications; copy and distribute Medi-Cal information to children and their families; inform children and/or their parents about medical services available through school or in the local community; refer children to medical services covered by Medi-Cal (part of SST process); provide health related information to children and/or their parents;
identify at risk children and families and refer them to the proper agencies for services; may provide clerical support for Medi-Cal eligibility outreach and for health service referrals; assist families and students with paperwork necessary to complete Medi-Cal and/or Healthy Families applications. Instruction Establishes instructional/learning environment for students; develops, adapts/modifies and sequences a variety of instructional activities to meet the students' individual goals/objectives which are based on the student's IEP;
provides student instruction; monitors/charts behavioral and instructional progress for the students; establishes/maintains behavioral management system for student; establishes a varied environment which accommodates the differing ways that children learn; maintains records and reports regarding pupil progress in a timely manner. Utilize research based techniques that are specifically designed to assist the ASD population learn. May provide direct instruction to students in the areas of self-help and domestic skills;
communication skills; gross motor and fine motor skills; ambulation and mobility skills/physical therapy; social and recreation/leisure skills; community and vocational skills; independent living; academic skills, where appropriate. Interpersonal Relations/Communications Maintains cooperative working relationships with parents, staff, other school district personnel and other community service agencies; maintains effective and timely written and oral communication with parents, staff, other school personnel, and community agencies;
conducts yearly interviews with parents/care providers to obtain pertinent information in relation to student program planning; attends various school related meetings. Training/Consultation Provides parent education related to students' needs; trains paraprofessionals assigned to class, provides inservice training/consultation to staff, school district personnel, volunteers, and agency personnel; works with regular education staff to foster integration of special education students; participates in professional development activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training, and Experience Possession of a California special education credential authorizing the teaching of severely handicapped students.
