Summary of the PositionA Commercial Loan Officer analyzes, structures, underwrites and services a variety of business and individual loans, both secured and unsecured. They are detail‑oriented, provide initial credit screening of new loan opportunities, and work closely with team members to deliver soundly structured credit solutions to existing and prospective bank clients. They are responsible for structuring and underwriting loan requests, guiding them through the delivery channel, and presenting credit requests in written and verbal form.
The Commercial Loan Officer keeps management informed on portfolio status, performs risk assessment of all credit requests, provides financial counsel to customers, and ensures compliance with bank policies and federal/state regulations.
- Structure and underwrite credit requests; prepare credit write‑ups for approval.
- Analyze, recommend, and present consumer and commercial credit requests for approval.
- Develop and maintain quality customer relationships; call on existing customers to provide additional banking products.
- Make and service a variety of business and individual loans and lines of credit, both secured and unsecured.
- Monitor status of loans in assigned portfolio and request required customer information per loan documents.
- Ensure covenant compliance and promptly notify management of any deterioration in the portfolio.
- Review loan documentation, cross‑reference with approved loan requests, and ensure accuracy before sending to customers for signature.
- Maintain complete and accurate loan files; prepare files for audits.
- Represent the bank at select civic and community functions to generate additional business.
- Guide and mentor junior staff members, including training of credit analysts.
- Review and underwrite customer requests for ACH and RDC.
- Assist senior lenders as back‑up officer or in analyzing credits.
- Comply with applicable bank policies and all banking regulations, including BSA, USA Patriot/CIP, AML, Fair Lending, CRA, and compliance regulations.
- Remain current with compliance training and other periodic trainings as assigned.
- Meet measurable goals and objectives assigned annually, due by December 31.
- Perform and assist in other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, or related field or equivalent work experience.
- One year or more of commercial credit underwriting experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of accounting and financial statement basics.
- Knowledge of credit principles, concepts, theory, loan structure, and banking products.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience working in a team setting to meet client needs and respond promptly to client requests.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
- Working knowledge of computers and software such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel.
- Experience with spreading software (Moody’s, Baker Hill, Credit Quest) is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, or related field or equivalent work experience.
- Three years or more of commercial credit underwriting and loan structuring experience.
- Ability to interact independently with customers to determine needs for loan structuring.
- Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Willingness to recommend bank products and services that meet client needs.
- Detail oriented; able to analyze and solve complex customer issues timely.
- Advanced knowledge of accounting principles and reading financial statements.
- Advanced knowledge of credit principles, theories, loan structure, banking products, and third‑party lending programs.
- Working knowledge of loan documentation and collateral requirements.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
