OverviewThe Custodian maintains buildings, furniture, and equipment in a clean, sanitary, safe condition; sets up for meetings and special events. This includes routine cleaning, minor maintenance, and ensuring security and basic safety standards are met.
Responsibilities- Maintain buildings and furniture in a clean, sanitary, safe, and secure condition during an assigned shift; clean and perform minor maintenance repairs on assigned equipment.
- Sweep, scrub, and mop rooms, halls, stairways, and offices; strip, sand, refinishes, wax, or buff floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets; operate custodial equipment (buffers, floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, vacuums).
- Empty and sanitize waste receptacles and ashtrays; pick up papers and debris; empty pencil sharpeners as needed.
- Dust, clean, and polish furniture and fixtures; remove cobwebs; clean desks and countertops.
- Change light bulbs and fluorescent tubes as needed.
- Clean whiteboards, trays, and erasers; arrange classroom furniture and equipment; restock classrooms with supplies.
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, floor mats, doors, drinking fountains, and fixtures; restock and may order supplies; maintain sanitary standards; may perform minor pest control tasks.
- Wash walls, remove markings, wash windows/mirrors/blinds; clean filters and kitchen hoods.
- Move furniture and equipment for set-ups; assist with campus functions and events using appropriate equipment; make minor repairs to fixtures/equipment.
- Open and close campus entry points; manage doors and turn on elevators; raise/lower/replace flags as required.
- Secure internal and external doors at close of day or after events; ensure windows/lights are off; activate/deactivate alarm system as needed.
- Report hazards (fire, sanitary, safety, security) and notify appropriate authority for maintenance or repairs.
- Operate campus vehicles as required.
- Perform other duties related to primary custodial responsibilities.
- Experience:
Six (6) months of custodial experience that includes minor building and equipment maintenance. - License:
Possession of a valid driver's license. - Education/Training:
Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- Two (2) years of custodial experience that includes minor building and equipment maintenance; experience in a school environment is preferred.
Environment:
Work is performed in indoor and outdoor settings; travel between sites; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, and other conditions; may work evenings, nights, and weekends; surfaces may be slippery or uneven.
Physical:
Requires moderately strenuous manual labor; frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, and twisting; ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 40 pounds regularly and heavier weights with assistance; use of hand/power tools; operate equipment.
Vision/Hearing:
Normal or corrected vision; ability to read printed documents; normal hearing range.
- Submit to and pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting (cost borne by candidate).
- TB risk assessment.
- Other pre-employment requirements may apply depending on position.
