Position: Court Reporter (Grade 14)

Job Summary

Make verbatim stenotype record of legal proceedings for the Superior Court, produce accurate and timely transcripts in the required format, develop, prepare and present official court transcripts, and provide supporting clerical and typing assistance to judges and attorneys.

Nature of Work

Attend court sessions to record spoken words using stenograph or dictation equipment, provide real‑time reporting, read back testimony, support court staff with typing orders and memos, maintain court‑room procedures, coordinate paperwork, use Computer Aided Transcription (CAT) software for editing and correction, proofread and certify final copies, keep updates on transcript indexes, and perform related duties as directed.

Experience and Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent and certification from an accredited vocational/technical school in court reporting; OR certification as a Registered Professional Reporter; OR designation as Certified Shorthand Reporter from the State of Arizona; OR certification from the Superior Court.
  • At least two years of freelance and/or official court reporting experience.
Additional Requirements

Applicants must pass criminal background checks. A valid Arizona State Driver’s License may be required. Employees must have yearly COJET accreditation and maintain certification as a Registered Professional Reporter, or the corresponding state designation.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Work is performed within a standard office environment and court facilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of state and federal court rules, legal terminology, and court procedures.
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Transcription software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Proficiency with a personal computer and related applications.
  • Strong clerical and record‑keeping abilities; transcription speed of 225 words per minute with high accuracy.
