The job of Paraprofessional - ESS Moderate/Severe is to provide support to the instructional program within the assigned classroom with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom or in a self‑contained classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non‑classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel;
and attending IEP meetings.
- Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
- Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication, etc.) to meet immediate health care needs.
- Administer tests, homework, make‑up work, etc. to support teachers in the classroom.
- Assist medically fragile or physically disabled students to maintain personal hygiene.
- Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, crisis prevention/intervention, professional development, etc.) to acquire and convey information relative to job functions.
- Communicate with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents (e.g., interpreting, home visits, etc.) to assist in evaluating progress and implementing IEP objectives.
- Document student’s daily activities (e.g., behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times, etc.) for daily logs and hourly activities.
- Evaluate situations involving other staff, students, parents, the public, etc. to take action or provide referral for resolution.
- Implement, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to present and reinforce learning concepts.
- Maintain instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records to ensure availability, provide written reference, and meet mandated requirements.
- Model conversation, manners, clean‑up activities, listening, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Monitor student’s daily schedule and behavior plan (e.g., class schedule, toileting, medication, appetite, etc.) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Monitor students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g., rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) to maintain safety.
- Provide, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g., academic subjects, reading, writing, behavioral skills, verbal skills, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement IEP plans, and ensure student success.
- Remain with student at all times to provide safety, remove student when necessary, and de‑escalate situations outside the classroom.
- Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Arizona D.P.S. Health Services Fingerprint Card.
- Tuberculosis Clearance.
- Hepatitis B Clearance.
- CPR/First Aid Certificate Renewal.
- Food Handlers/Safe Serv Certificate.
Job‑related experience is desired.
