Purpose Statement

The Paraprofessional – ESS Moderate/Severe supports the instructional program within an assigned classroom, assists in supervising, caring for, and instructing special‑needs students in the regular classroom or a self‑contained classroom, implements instructional plans, monitors student behavior during non‑classroom time, provides information to school personnel, and attends IEP meetings. This job reports to the Principal and Assigned Teacher.

Essential Functions
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication).
  • Administers tests, homework, make‑up work, etc. to support teachers in the classroom.
  • Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students to maintain personal hygiene.
  • Attends meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, crisis prevention/intervention, professional development) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
  • Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents (e.g., interpreting, home visits) to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Documents student's daily activities (e.g., behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times) in daily logs and hourly activities.
  • Evaluates situations involving staff, students, parents, the public, etc. to take action and/or provide referral for resolution.
  • Implements under teacher supervision, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to reinforce learning concepts.
  • Maintains instructional materials and records to ensure availability, provide written references, and meet mandated requirements.
  • Models conversation, manners, clean‑up activities, listening, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Monitors student's daily schedule and behavior plan (e.g., class schedule, toileting, medication, appetite) to maintain a safe, positive learning environment.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods within various school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to maintain safety.
  • Provides, under teacher supervision, instruction to students in individual and group activities (e.g., academic subjects, reading, writing, behavioral skills, verbal skills, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement IEP plans, and ensure student success.
  • Remains with the student at all times to provide safety, remove the student when necessary, and de‑escalate situations outside the classroom.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities KR 1 – Adhere to safety practices; operate standard office equipment and software; prepare and maintain accurate records. KR 2 – Basic mathematics (fractions, percents, ratios); read manuals, write documents per prescribed formats, present information; understand complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions. KR 3 – Instructional procedures and practices; age‑appropriate student activities; safety practices; conflict resolution; child development stages.

Preferably hold an Associate degree and/or passing score on an ADE‑approved assessment.
