The job of School Psychologist is undertaken to measure and interpret the intellectual, adaptive, academic, social, and emotional development of children; to interpret psychological study results; to apply state and federal codes; and to develop strategies and interventions that address the exceptional student and special education needs of eligible students.
This position reports to the Exceptional Student Services Director.
Essential Functions- Administers standardized and/or supplemental assessments to measure development and determine eligibility for services in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Assesses students’ functional capabilities and their home or classroom environments to determine functional levels and develop recommendations or placement plans.
- Communicates with students, parents, teachers, and other personnel to evaluate situations, solve problems, and resolve conflicts.
- Compiles information from multiple sources (e.g., teachers, nurses, probation officers, mental‑health agencies, other professionals) to produce comprehensive evaluation reports in compliance with established guidelines.
- Consults with teachers, parents, multi‑disciplinary evaluation and IEP team members, and outside professionals to provide information, develop service plans, and make recommendations.
- Coordinates with community agencies (medical, judicial, social service, mental‑health) to determine appropriate treatments and meet specific student needs.
- Counsels students, parents, and guardians to enhance student success in school.
- Develops behavior plans, curriculum modifications, instructional strategies, and service delivery models to implement effective treatment programs.
- Facilitates meetings, processes, and other activities to meet curriculum guidelines and ensure state mandates are achieved.
- Implements school‑wide program development and program evaluation (e.g., crisis intervention services) to provide effective support for students with physical, mental, social, or emotional difficulties.
- Intervenes in occurrences of inappropriate behavior to help students modify behaviors and develop interpersonal skills.
- Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars to convey or gather information required to perform functions.
- Prepares a wide variety of written materials—such as extension requests, correspondence, memos, behavior plans, Medicaid billings, reports, and required documentation—to document activities and provide written references.
- Researches resources and methods to determine appropriate approaches for meeting students’ functional goals.
- Supervises interns, practicum students, and others, monitoring performance and supporting professional growth to achieve overall curriculum objectives.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Applying assessment instruments and operating standard office equipment, including pertinent computer software.
- Preparing and maintaining accurate records and facilitating meetings.
- Advanced mathematics, reviewing and interpreting technical information, writing technical materials, and speaking persuasively to implement desired actions.
- Analyzing situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
- Knowledge of psychology and educational principles, codes, policies, regulations, laws, and age‑appropriate activities/behaviors.
- Knowledge of assessment instruments and techniques, cultural differences in student populations, community resources, instruction and training methods, and record‑keeping practices.
- Skilled in scheduling activities, meetings, and events; gathering, collating, and classifying data; and using job‑related equipment.
- Adaptable to changing work priorities and capable of independent problem‑solving.
- Effective communication with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines, working as part of a team, and building strong working relationships.
- Job‑related experience within a specialized field (School Psychology).
- Master’s degree in School Psychology or a related area.
- Valid Arizona School Psychologist Certificate, including continuing education requirements.
- Valid driver’s license and evidence of insurability.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
- Exempt – Approval Date:
May 12, 2014.
