PT - Military and Veteran Student Advisor / School Certifying Official

Salary: $20.32 Per Hour

Summary of Function

The Military and Veteran Student Advisor serves an advisor role and School Certifying Official, ensuring a high-quality student experience for veterans and their families by advising prospective and current military-affiliated students through the admissions, education, and graduation processes to provide a seamless transition. The role is also responsible for reviewing student veteran files to ensure complete documentation and compliance with Veterans Administration (VA) regulations;

accurately preparing and submitting VA enrollment certifications, training, and notices of change of enrollment; fulfilling VA reporting requirements and documentation retention guidelines.

Typical Duties
  • Serves students. Creates Individual Education Plans for military and veteran students, spouses, and their dependents, ensuring compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and processes. Processes new student intakes, including but not limited to the admission application process and advisement of the various educational benefits available to the military and veteran student and dependent population. Reviews and evaluates academic and military transcripts, degree track, and graduation requirements.
  • Serves as an assistant Veteran Services Compliance Specialist/School Certifying Official. Reviews student veteran files to ensure all required documentation is included and maintained for compliance with Veterans Administration (VA) regulations. Responsible for the accuracy, submission of accurate VA student enrollment certifications, notices of change of enrollment, and periodic verifications of pursuit of training. Responsible for fulfilling VA reporting requirements. Follows appropriate guidelines for documentation retention.

    Reviews academic and military transcripts, verifies credit transfers, the concurrent enrollment process, degree tracks, and graduation requirements for students using VA educational benefits processed by academic advisors.
  • Assists in tracking student retention programming. Tracks at-risk and academic probation students. Assists with the outreach, recruitment, and general marketing activities for veteran and military constituents. Assists with inclusive programming and training, such as Green Zone Ally training. Supports students in the development of Prior Learning Assessment portfolios. Collaborates with other student services departments and faculty to promote awareness of co-curricular opportunities for military and veteran students.
  • Supports and participates in strategic initiatives and performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, OR
  • High School Diploma or equivalent or higher and three years of experience in one of the following areas:
    Student Services, Case Management, Advising, Community Outreach, OR
  • Applicants may indicate any additional language proficiencies in their application materials, including English/Spanish, as relevant to the position
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered
Additional Eligibility Requirements
  • Arizona Driver's License or Equivalent

  • Work flexible schedule to meet the program, department, and/or institutional needs, which may include Fridays, nights, and/or weekends
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret, apply, and follow college policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of or ability to maintain organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures
  • Knowledge of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education programs, including Chapters and coverage
  • Skill in current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications, Windows, college system platforms, software, and applications, especially those specific to the department operations
  • Skill and ability to be self-directed and to manage one's own time
  • Skill in performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
  • Skill in collaborating with Admissions, Financial Aid, and the Registrar's office
  • Ability to complete all departmental and/or institutional mandatory training or development
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion, with close attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to provide assistance in a professional and supportive manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, in writing, and in a public setting, and to relate to others in a professional manner
  • Ability to maintain accurate student files in accordance with institution, VA, state and/or federal requirements
