SummaryThe RN Clinical Lactation Consultant applies clinical expertise, professional judgment, and in‑depth knowledge of the breastfeeding dyad to support and educate breastfeeding mothers and their families across prenatal, postpartum, and outpatient settings. The role involves documenting care, implementing care modalities, facilitating communication between the breastfeeding dyad, physicians, and the health care team, serving as a resource for nursing staff and physicians, conducting research, and offering consultations on breastfeeding‑related matters.
The position also includes participation in specialized outreach programs focused on Maternal and Child Health.
- Provides direct and indirect breastfeeding care; responds to referrals by physicians, nursing personnel, and/or patients; assesses, plans, and executes care involving patient and family; performs evaluations and provides treatment in a timely, systematic manner, following standard format and within the time specified by specialty standards; formulates a goal‑directed prioritized inpatient developmental care plan or outpatient home program; makes daily routine rounds and provides assistance to mothers experiencing breastfeeding problems;
utilizes proper body mechanics; reports faulty equipment and safety hazards upon discovery. - Serves as a consultant in the management of breastfeeding patients; consults with physicians and nursing personnel regarding individual cases; maintains effective working relationships; documents consultations and communicates with physicians regarding consults; ensures nursing care plan reflects continuity of breastfeeding support.
- Functions as a resource for other staff and other agencies, responding to requests of Assistant Manager or Director for information and assistance; offers assistance to public‑health nurses; provides lactation education to physicians, nursing staff, patients, and consumers; participates in prenatal and community education; provides prenatal breastfeeding classes as part of the Childbirth Education program if needed; assesses, implements, and evaluates community education programs;
provides outreach on available lactation services. - Teaches staff through role modeling when providing patient lactation support; provides individual educational assistance to all Maternal/Infant nursing staff; updates and standardizes literature and equipment for breastfeeding support; provides input into development or revision of nursing guidelines and procedures; presents a favorable image of Onvida Health within the community.
- Demonstrates self‑responsibility and accountability for own professional practice; validates knowledge base, skill level and decision making; remains current in policies, procedures, JCAHO guidelines, standards; remains professionally responsive to other employees and departments acting as a resource person.
- Responsible for formulation of the Lactation Services Quality Improvement Plan and conducting quality improvement activities in accordance with the plan; actively participates in the Quality Improvement program; collects data for QA/AI and communicates with Director.

- Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC)

- Associate's Degree
- Associate degree in Nursing
- AZ RN license
- BLS certification
- Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) OR Certified Lactation Educator OR Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) (preferred)
- 3+ years of RN experience caring for women and newborns in a post‑partum setting or related experience such as a lactation clinic.
