Job Description

Under the direction of the District Health Coordinator, the Registered Nurse (RN) provides clinical oversight, nursing support, and coordination of health services for an assigned cluster of schools. The RN supports student health and safety through application of the nursing process, staff training, health plan oversight, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with school teams. This position may serve as the acting lead in the absence of the District Health Coordinator and assists with district wide health services operations.

Functions
  • Provides nursing oversight, clinical guidance, and operational coordination for assigned school health offices staffed by health assistants within the assigned cluster.
  • Assists with development, implementation, and review of Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and health‑related accommodations.
  • Supports compliance with district policies, nursing standards, and applicable state and federal regulations, including FERPA, IDEA, 504, and Arizona Board of Nursing requirements.
  • Conducts nursing assessments and provides clinical guidance for student health concerns and medically complex students.
  • Assists with monitoring health trends, operational concerns, reporting needs, and risk identification within the assigned cluster.
  • Coordinates and conducts vision and hearing screenings, referrals, follow‑up, and documentation in accordance with district procedures and state guidelines.
  • Coordinates and participates in emergency preparedness planning, mock codes, and school emergency response activities.
  • Assists with training, competency validation, and ongoing support of health office staff related to medication administration, diabetes care, seizure management, emergency response, and other health‑related procedures.
  • Maintains required nursing certifications and supports compliance with district and state training requirements.
  • Assists with development, implementation, maintenance and oversight of district health programs, procedures, and emergency medication initiatives (e.g., Neffy program).
  • Collaborates with administrators, teachers, families, providers, and multidisciplinary teams regarding student health needs.
  • Collaborates in district initiatives, meetings and school‑based planning related to student health, safety, and health services operations.
  • Reviews documentation practices and supports standardized health office procedures, compliance processes, and Medicaid‑related documentation requirements across assigned schools.
  • Provides coverage and operational support during staff shortages, emergencies, or absences as needed, performing the job duties as an LPN or health assistant.
  • Serves as a district nursing resource and may assist with coordination of health services in the absence of the District Health Coordinator.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited professional nursing program.
  • Current Arizona RN license.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • IVP Fingerprint card or ability to obtain prior to employment.
  • Experience working with pediatric and medically fragile populations preferred.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with students, staff, families, and the community.
  • Knowledge of modern office equipment and computer software applications.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Terms of Employment

Work year, salary, and benefits as established by the Board. Salary: $61,305 to $72,124 per year. Position type:
Full‑time.

Evaluation

Performance of this job shall be evaluated by the District Health Coordinator in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Position requires walking, standing, bending or kneeling. Occasional lifting or moving of students. High visual acuity and hearing are required to conduct routine health screenings and assess injuries. Fine motor skills are needed for precise tasks like administering medication and dressing wounds. Primary workspace is an on‑campus health office. The work environment varies from very quiet to fast‑paced and chaotic depending on illness outbreaks or campus emergencies.

Frequently exposed to communicable diseases (e.g., flu, COVID‑19, strep throat). Requires ability to triage and manage acute and chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes.
