Summary

The Nurse Educator RN serves as the clinical expert and drives evidence based clinical practice for all staff; has responsibility for assessing unit nursing practice and its impact on patient outcomes; leads and provides clinical direction to nursing staff in the delivery of patient care programs; ensures licensed staff maintains an established level of clinical competency; assumes ongoing responsibilities for the coordination of department orientation and education for all personnel;

oversees the clinical direction of unit specific orientation, staff development, skills training, continuing education, staff education records and participation in quality, safety, and satisfaction programs; provides direct care to patients using the Nursing Process as needed to model best practice; supports collaborative environment through partnering with unit leadership and through coaching, mentoring and counseling as needed.

Responsibilities

Displays clinical reasoning, which includes clinical decision making, critical thinking, and a holistic view of a given situation, coupled with nursing skills through a process of integrating formal and experiential knowledge; plans unit preceptorships and actively participates in review process of new staff; progresses staff toward independent function through collaboration with preceptors, unit leadership, physicians and other department leaders; guides the planning and participation of unit staff to provide organization and unit-specific in-services and training of preceptors and assignments for new staff;

guides the growth and competency development of orientees, including recommendations regarding further educational training; mentors, coaches and leads nursing personnel to provide safe and effective evidence based care in a rapidly changing environment or critical situation; monitors and supports new organizational and/or unit practices through audit, observation and other methodologies; counsels staff informally and formally to ensure recognition and support of practice initiatives and priorities at all levels of the organization;

integrates advanced technologies with clinical practice to enhance learning and adoption at the unit level and organizationally when appropriate; promotes a healthy supportive learning environment utilizing adult learning concepts; takes complex material to the level of the learner; initiates and/or participates in nursing research; models behavior that is conducive to the education of students, externs and other healthcare professionals that meets the standards for professional practice and clinical competency as set forth by ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) and ANA (American Nursing Association).

Strategically creates practice changes through research utilization and experiential learning; assists nursing staff in accessing nursing databases available for resources to support evidence based practice; role models proactive efforts to achieve optimal patient care outcomes based on identified initiatives, best practice and evidenced based guideline score measures, medication reconciliation, etc.; identifies and assesses learning needs for healthcare providers in the assigned area using evidenced based data and tools (including skills inventories, occurrence reports, performance improvement data, staff skills inventory, patient surveys, and feedback from staff, patients, physicians and administration, etc.)
