Overview

Senior Equipment Mechanic position with the City of Yuma, working with the Department of Public Works. The role involves performing technical inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting on City vehicles, specialty vehicles, and heavy equipment. The position is available in both part-time and full-time capacities.

First review begins Monday, June 1, 2026; the position remains open until filled.

Responsibilities
  • Work independently to examine equipment malfunctions, troubleshoot actual and potential problems, repair, disassemble, rebuild, and adjust equipment and components; fabricate and recondition parts as needed; ensure equipment functions meet specifications and codes.
  • Perform skilled maintenance, repairs, adjustments, and preventive maintenance on a diverse fleet including light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and machinery; assist with training and cross-training of other mechanics.
  • Inspect and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems; determine necessary repairs, prioritize work, and perform repairs within authority; develop innovative solutions for complex issues.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance to maximize vehicle life, reduce downtime, and improve productivity; perform specialized repairs to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Inspect vehicle status, perform safety inspections, recommend replacements/major repairs, and install auxiliary or specialized equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair engines and components across gasoline, diesel, and hybrid systems; use manuals and computer tools to diagnose and correct problems.
  • Maintain records of services, open/close work orders, and document hours, parts used, and repairs completed.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, fuel, hydraulic, pneumatic, braking, drive train, suspension, exhaust, and cooling systems; perform welding and fabricate metal parts as needed; conduct body and related metal repairs.
  • Transport equipment between field and shop; perform emergency field repairs as required; report issues beyond authority or capability to supervision.
  • Maintain and clean shop facilities; handle chemicals per safety regulations; adhere to safety procedures and promote safety culture.
  • Support positive public relationships, interact courteous with citizens and City staff; align with City policies and the City’s values.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; perform other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; and four years of experience in maintenance and repair of automotive and mechanical equipment (including heavy equipment) in a fleet environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures; repair methods and equipment for vehicles, specialty vehicles, and heavy equipment; gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines; hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Awareness of safety rules and OSHA/MSDS requirements; experience with preventive maintenance programs; metal fabrication and welding methods; familiarity with local geography and facility locations; environmentally responsible fleet management techniques.
  • Ability to inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical problems; work independently; monitor operations and identify safety issues; use specialized tools and perform electrical/mechanical repairs; read and interpret technical manuals and specifications; promote safe work practices; manage multiple tasks; maintain fleet records; operate a computer; communicate effectively in writing and verbally; establish positive working relationships.
Licenses and Certifications

A valid Class A Arizona State Commercial Driver's License is required within one year of hire. National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Medium/Heavy Truck and EVT Level 1 certification required within one year of hire. Must have own hand tools. Additional certifications may be required for some incumbents.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Work is performed in repair and maintenance facilities with moderate physical requirements. Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds; exposure to safety hazards and dangerous tools; requires vision for fine calibrations and color differentiation.
