We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as an Equipment Operator, working with the department of Public Works. The ideal candidate has experience operating equipment in road construction or public works.
Under basic supervision, operates basic construction, maintenance, and transportation equipment in a variety of Public Works Department (PWD) maintenance activities including excavating, trenching, street cleaning and repair, roadway component repairs, and traffic sign and signal maintenance; operates vehicles, equipment, and tools in accordance with all safety regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Assists in maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, roadways, infrastructure, properties, and signage for the Public Works Department (PWD), in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; duties will vary according to job assignment.
- Operates a variety of trucks and equipment, including dump truck, water truck, compaction roller, oil distributor, asphalt patching, crack sealer, front-end loader, backhoe, boom/lift truck, and skid steer loader.
- Assists in repair and maintenance of roads and roadways; hauls materials and equipment to job sites; repairs street surfaces, patches asphalt; installs and repairs concrete components, performs fog sealing and crack sealing functions; inspects vehicles and equipment before and after work shift.
- Performs seasonal roadway maintenance duties; sweeps streets and clears foliage and debris.
- Assists in the setup of traffic control zones at Public Works construction sites to minimize risk of accidents and enhance safety of work crews; assists with traffic flagging as needed; repairs street signs and lights.
- Trains and cross-trains in construction and maintenance procedures, techniques and safety standard.
- Monitors work site to verify that safety rules and regulations are followed, and that the work area and all equipment are in safe operating condition; reports safety hazards, traffic problems, equipment problems and emergency situations to PWD supervisor.
- Performs maintenance and repairs within scope of authority, and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; notifies supervisor of safety hazards, equipment problems and emergency situations.
- Adheres to safety procedures in work areas and in performance of work assignments; promotes a culture of safety.
- Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
- Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND one year of experience operating equipment in road construction or public works; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge Of- City policies and procedures.
- City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Traffic laws and regulations involved in truck and equipment operations.
- Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and ADOT standards, protocols, specifications and guidelines for public works construction and safety standards in hazardous traffic environments.
- City geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks and facility locations.
- Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Inspecting and maintaining vehicles and specialized equipment.
- Promoting and following safe work practices.
- Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with co-workers.
- Following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
