Job

Work with members of the construction team to ensure smooth operations of daily paving on each job. Performs wide responsibilities associated with the lay down of asphalt. The Shelly Company needs multiple experienced asphalt crew members. Ideal candidates will hold a Class A or B CDL and/or have screed experience in the asphalt industry. Candidates must be willing to travel, work flexible and varied hours, and join the laborer’s union immediately.

• Assist paving crew with various duties such as shovel and raking, luting, running wheelbarrow, and safely backing/dumping trucks into the paver.
• Perform miscellaneous duties, including equipment maintenance and assisting the foreperson or crew members as needed.
• Follow directions and perform daily equipment maintenance:
• Inspect the machine for physical damage, loose parts, or missing components.
• Check levels of all fluids (brake, fuel, transmission, power steering, engine coolant, hydraulic system).
• Inspect various systems for leaks and ensure all plugs, filler caps, and fittings are leak-free.
• Examine tires/tracks for cuts, bulges, or abnormal wear and ensure proper inflation.
• Grease machine daily.
• Complete all company required paperwork in a timely and accurate manner.
• Adjust tow arms, screed, and flow gates to maintain appropriate head of material, angle of attack, and depth of mix.
• Monitor distance from the plant and number of trucks on haul to pace the paver, ensuring continuous operation.
• Operate the paver efficiently, managing the hopper, maintaining straight lines, and coordinating with drivers to discharge material in appropriate amounts.
• Maintain complete command of the machine and surrounding operations at all times.
• Communicate with the operator to avoid stop-and-go paving and ensure smooth transitions at stopping and taking-off points.
• Keep equipment clean; wiping down equipment promotes a positive public image and enables close inspection.

• Display a professional and courteous attitude toward co‑workers, supervisors, and the general public.
• Be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
• Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
• Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
• Strictly adhere to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.
• Strictly follow Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Book of Policies.
• Work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
• Maintain timely and regular attendance.

Education and Experience: Less than or equal to a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination.

Personal Protective Equipment: Required to wear PPE such as welding gloves, hard hat, hearing protection, safety shoes, seatbelt, and harnesses when required.

Language

Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations.

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form and deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.

Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, with assistance. Must bend, kneel, push, pull, squat, climb, stand, walk, sit, reach, drive, use fine motor skills, and perform repetitive motion. Vision ability requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment includes operating near moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, wet or humid conditions, airborne particles, and extremes of heat or cold. The noise level is usually loud and may require protective equipment.
