6th - 8th Grade Communication and Behavior Support (CABS) Special Education Teacher
Beach Park Middle School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to lead a self-contained 6th - 8th grade Communication and Behavior Support (CABS) classroom focusing on students with autism. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of autism spectrum disorder, demonstrate expertise in implementing individualized education programs (IEPs), and excel at creating a positive and supportive learning environment.
This role requires a patient, understanding, and highly adaptable educator committed to fostering student growth and independence.
- Instruction and Curriculum
- Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) tailored to the unique needs of students with autism.
- Provide direct instruction in academic subjects, communication skills, social skills, and behavior management strategies.
- Adapt and modify curriculum materials to meet individual student learning styles and needs.
- Utilize evidence-based practices and strategies for teaching students with autism, including visual supports, sensory integration techniques, and applied behavior analysis (ABA) principles.
- Implement and monitor progress of behavior intervention plans (BIPs).
- Classroom Management and Support
- Create and maintain a structured, predictable, and positive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and learning.
- Implement effective behavior management strategies to address challenging behaviors and promote positive social interactions.
- Provide individualized support and accommodations to meet the sensory, communication, and behavioral needs of students.
- Foster a classroom culture that values patience, understanding, and respect for individual differences.
- Supervise and direct paraprofessional support staff.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate with parents, therapists, administrators, and other professionals to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach to student support.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, including IEPs, progress reports, and behavior data.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and needs.
- Participate in IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and professional development activities.
- Assessment and Evaluation
- Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction as needed.
- Utilize a variety of assessment tools and strategies to evaluate student learning and identify areas of need.
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field (Master's degree preferred)
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with LBS1 endorsement (Learning Behavior Specialist I)
- Experience working with students with autism spectrum disorder in a self-contained classroom setting preferred
- Strong knowledge of IEP development and implementation
- Demonstrated ability to implement effective behavior management strategies
- In-depth understanding of IDEA, behavior intervention plans, and Illinois state requirements
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
- Patience, empathy, and a strong commitment to student success
- Understanding of sensory processing differences
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
- Experience with assistive technology
- Knowledge of social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies
- Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques or other behavior management methodologies
- Experience with data collection and analysis
School-based setting with primary work in a designated self-contained classroom. May involve physical activities such as lifting, standing for extended periods, and assisting students with mobility needs. Hours aligned with the elementary school schedule; occasional after-school meetings may be required.

Placement on the "Step and Lane" schedule is based on verified years of experience and graduate-level credit hours. BA with 0-3 years $46,284.05 through MA 36 $ 76025.41 Contractual Perks:
