Co-Educational Programs for Students from Preschool through Grade 12:
The educational program is deeply rooted in the philosophy that children want to succeed. The Academy’s goal is to provide an environment that allows for success in a classroom setting while accommodating for the needs of a diverse population. The curriculum that has emerged allows the teacher to teach high academic content while evaluating each child according to his/her ability. At the elementary level, basic components of the curriculum include multi-age learning, rote, basics, and sponge.

Preschool:
Our program is designed to serve children who are between the ages of 2 and 5. We operate at or near capacity on a regular basis. The preschool is licensed by the state to care for 50 children and has consistently received perfect scores in its inspections and licensure reviews. The preschool is open from 7:00am to 6:00 pm. This allows the school to operate educationally as a preschool and yet serves the communities' needs by offering a convenient daycare schedule to parents who work outside the home.

Elementary Program:
The elementary program, grades 1-8, consists of three separate units, each called a family. The families are designed to mimic three small community schools that foster a secure environment for the student. Structure and material coordinate the units, as well as techniques used by AIE so that each group functions within a similar pattern.

Multi-age learning:
Multi-age learning is used to encourage developmental competition allowing each child to see their academic progress as a result of their growth and decreases the tendency for comparison.

Sponge Room:
Each of the individual families has a “sponge” room. A sponge room contains a variety of learning materials and items for hands-on activities and is open to the students, in most cases, twice a day. The subject areas available for exploration in the sponge room include such subjects as science, social studies, reading and math. The sponge room has three instructors and may hold up to 32 students at one time.

Rote and Basics:

Both rote and basics are integral components in AIE’s success in working with the wide variety of students it serves from K-12th. Daily recitation of facts and lists, along with the regular repetition of basic information in a brief written format, have long been recognized as effective elements in education. It is through this use of rote memorization activities, both verbal and written, that we have been able to watch accelerated students and students identified as educationally at-risk develop confidence to assertively interact and discuss information with peers and instructors.

Curriculum:
Academy for Individual Excellence (AIE) has built a curriculum that has grown and developed throughout its history using material and methodology that has demonstrated success in the classroom. Each grade is presented with grade level material in a manner consistent with the Academy’s methods and philosophy. At the high school level, the Academy offers the classes outlined by the KHEAA, as required for pre-college curriculum.
