Sabot at Stony Point, Richmond:
Sabot at Stony Point is an independent school for children in preschool through 8th grade, located in the Bon Air neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia. We believe that learning is a life-long journey, not an activity that begins and ends with school. Children are naturally inquisitive and motivated to learn. But school plays a pivotal role in sustaining their thirst for knowledge and in cultivating the discipline and critical habits of mind that last a lifetime.

Educational Programs from Preschool through Grade 8:

Preschool (Ages 2.5 - 5):

Photo of Private K-8 School in Richmond, VAOur preschool serves children from 2 1/2 - 5 years old and the program meets 5 days a week from 9 a.m. - noon.
Teachers and the specially prepared environment support the children in their investigations, making available a wide variety of media and “languages” in which the children can express their ideas, questions, and theories, revealing their many forms of intelligence. As children actively construct knowledge with teachers and other students, they acquire the habit of social responsibility, both as individuals who respect others, and as members of a learning community who can negotiate, collaborate, and seek solutions collectively.

Lower School (Kindergarten - 5th Grade):

The core curriculum at Sabot at Stony Point – literacy, math, science and social studies – provides the framework for students’ academic learning. Particularly at the Lower School level, skills and subjects such as foreign language, art, music, library skills and technology are integrated into this framework, rather than isolated as “special” subjects. This strategy allows students to work systematically in different media, to draw on a broad variety of resources as they pursue lines of inquiry, to be creative in their problem-solving, and to understand that questions can be approached via a range of disciplines, tools and perspectives. Time is devoted to physical education several times a week.

Middle School (6th - 8th Grade):

Walk into our Middle School classrooms. You will not see heads bowed silently over textbooks, or students who listen passively as a teacher speaks. Instead, you will find small workshops in which students are active, engaged, and purposeful. As much as possible, the work that Middle School students do is connected to the real world; they address real problems, use real-world resources, and find multiple answers to their never-ending stream of real questions.

Learning in the Middle School is collaborative, investigative and deeply intellectual. While content is essential – you can’t have genuine understanding without it – students also learn to develop the tools of inquiry and the habits of mind that will make them life-long learners and problem-solvers. Students are encouraged and expected to approach their work with passion, intelligence, and creativity; block scheduling allows them to pursue topics in depth. Our goal is not simply to transmit information, but rather to teach students how to think and communicate like historians, writers, mathematicians, scientists and artists.
