Arts University Bournemouth (AUB):
Join us at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) for an educational and cultural summer experience to remember! Established in 1885, AUB is a leading provider of high-quality creative arts education to UK & international students, recognised as one of the UK’s leading arts university. Situated on the coast, less than 2 hours south of London by train, the University offers a range of 3-week specialist summer courses for students ages 16+ in a range of fields including Animation, Fashion, Make-up, Film Making, Architecture, Drawing & Illustration and Portfolio Preparation for Art. We also provide a 2-week Creative Arts Summer School course for students aged 14-16 year olds. Our new 2 week course "Creative Thinking & Skills Development" is for students 18 years of age and over. A study package including accommodation, meals & activities is available to students if required.
Creative Summer Courses 2019:
• Specialist 2 week and 3 week courses held in July & August for UK & international students
• 3 week courses for individuals, college students, senior high school students and adults, from ages 16+
• 2 week course for ages 14 to 16 years old
• All students taking part in one of our summer courses will receive an official AUB Certificate of Attendance upon successful completion
• 3 week course students also have the opportunity to attend an interview for a place on any of AUB’s 1 year Foundation or BA and MA courses

Written by our course teams, who teach on our full-time degree programmes, and supported by visiting tutors, specialist technicians and student graduates, our highly practical courses allow you to explore a range of approaches to creative thinking and making in a variety of art forms.
As well as learning about creative techniques and processes, our summer courses aim to increase your confidence in your artistic abilities, giving you the opportunity to make a more informed decision about your future. Join us this summer and explore your creative potential!
3 WEEK SUMMER COURSES
23 July – 9 August 2019, for ages 16+ years
• Introduction to Animation:
Learn the fundamentals of animation, including how to animate simple objects, character design, and story development. Through a series of seminars, workshops, and practical sessions, you will explore the 12 principles of animation in theory and practice. You will use 2D animation exercises to explore the fundamentals and develop your drawing skills.
Learn how to animate objects using contemporary and traditional animation techniques, experimenting with timing, space, and interaction. The application and use of post-production software are taught by experienced tutors. You will gain an understanding of editing techniques and creative post-production processes.
At the end of the course, there will be a screening of the animated films created during the course with the opportunity for critique and feedback.
• British Architecture & Design:
Based around the creative processes of ‘thinking and making’ to enhance your understanding of architectural design, this course explores architectural concepts of form, space, technology, and function through a mixture of practical training, theory, and field work.
By engaging in workshops and projects, you will be encouraged to apply creative exploration and experimentation when considering architectural design, including architectural model making and large scale installations.
Your studio sessions will be underpinned by course study trips with visits to significant public spaces and buildings including the Serpentine Pavilion, London and Stonehenge.
During your final week, you will work in groups on a practical urban planning and architecture project that will test your ability to solve problems as well as your aesthetic and technical knowledge.
At the end of the course, there will be an exhibition of the work produced with group presentations and tutor feedback.
• Practical Film Making:
If you are a budding filmmaker, this course provides a great introduction to the technical and creative aspects of making a film, from storyboarding through to post production.
Our tutors will guide you through the process of creating a film from initial script ideas through to the finished film product. Working in small groups, you will develop a screenplay, shooting script and storyboard for a short fiction film.
You will take part in pre-production tasks such as location scouting, casting, and developing a narrative, before beginning the live film shoot and post-production sessions.
• Creative Make-up Academy:
If you want to work as a professional make-up artist, or pursue further studies in this subject, this summer course taught in our dedicated make-up studios is ideal for you!
You will be introduced to a diverse range of make-up and hair skills, as well as exploring prosthetic make-up and special effects for television and film.
You will be encouraged to experiment with materials, styles and techniques with extended practical sessions giving you the opportunity to create your own looks. These will be recorded in a series of professional photo shoots to add to your portfolio or CV.
• Drawing & Illustration:
You will cover the fundamentals of drawing and illustration such as the use of tone and light, colour, line, the edge, shape, form, mark making and negative space. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of materials including charcoal, inks, sticks, oil pastel and chalk pastels, acrylics to name a few. You will develop your critical awareness of visual communication and explore a variety of illustration methods and techniques to enhance your understanding of the design process and effectively communicate your ideas. You will use our award winning drawing studio and take part in life drawing of a clothed life model and other still life.
The course includes sessions on location to inspire you, with day trips to areas such as Dorset’s impressive Jurassic coast.
• Fashion Design & Styling:
Gain an excellent introduction to the design and promotion side of the fashion industry!
Delivered from within our dedicated fashion studios and workshops, this course will allow you to experience the full fashion design process, starting with research, translation and drawing techniques, through to garment design. You will learn through a combination of studio work, practical exercises and excursions.
In addition, you will be introduced to key concepts in fashion promotion, editorial and blogging. At the end of the course, there will be a professional photo shoot to record your finished garments with exhibition and group critique of work produced.
• Portfolio Preparation for the Arts:
This course enables you to gain hands-on experience in a range of creative arts disciplines, increase your confidence in your creative abilities and make an informed decision about your artistic direction.
This makes it ideal if you are considering an arts degree, but are not yet sure which area you would like to focus on, need to develop your portfolio, or want to experience a variety of arts subjects at higher education level.
Over the 3 weeks, you will learn how to research and develop your ideas and produce work for your digital and physical portfolio with support and guidance from tutors including how to showcase and present your work.

Summer Residential Course (Optional)
We also offer a residential summer programme to compliment the above 3-week courses, which can be booked separately from the course itself. The majority of summer course students choose to book this as it offers good value – but it is entirely optional. It includes
- Accommodation in our Halls of Residence, (single occupancy room with en-suite bathroom)
- Breakfast and lunch (Monday -Friday)
- Halls/AUB bus transfer
- Some evening social activities
- Trip to London.

Our two-week inclusive residential course has been specifically designed for young students with a keen interest in the arts and in design, providing them with an exciting experience to explore creative pathways and develop skills for the future.
