Galway-Mayo Institute Of Technology:
The Galway–Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) is based at five locations in the west of Ireland. At the largest campus situated in Galway, we look out on the Atlantic Ocean and are reminded of Francis Bacon’s observation: “They are ill discoverers that think there is no land when they can see nothing but sea.” As a centre of higher education, we are engaged above all else in discovery. We hope that you will join with us in the voyage of learning which, for all of us, now extends throughout our lives
Galway is the most popular student city in Ireland. It is alive with a huge diversity of entertainment, which caters for a wide variety of tastes.
Galway is host to two cinemas, four theatres, over ten popular nightclubs and an abundance of pubs ranging from traditional Irish to the more modern cosmopolitan styles. Galway is also the home of a National University and an Institute of Technology, which attracts a notable bohemian crowd, and its boisterous nightlife and festivals fill the streets. Students who come to Galway will find an ample supply of accommodation: Glasán, Glen Na Rí and Cúirt na Rasaí are the student accommodation blocks close to GMIT.
Galway is a boom town which has experienced a recent surge of economic activity: it has a vibrant energy and an expanding number of shops, student facilities and restaurants to cater for your needs. If you need that extra cash to fund your college lifestyle, finding a part-time job shouldn’t prove too difficult. Another advantage is that there is increased opportunity for sourcing internships, work experience and careers once you receive your final qualification.
GMIT is located approximately 3 kms outside the city centre. There is a regular bus service that leaves GMIT every few minutes and takes you right into Eyre Square. There are also plenty of taxis available which can be free-phoned from inside GMIT. When you are busy with your academic studies, Galway offers a unique and diverse array of activities. The Eye Cinema is situated very close to GMIT and has student offers during the day for when you have a few hours off; other activities includes shopping, bowling, arcades, gyms, swimming and go karting.
Galway also has many fine cultural festivals including the February Jazz Festival, the Easter Festival of Literature and The Galway Arts festival in July. The Arts festival is a cultural extravaganza with two weeks of round the clock theatre, music, art and comedy. You are sure to find something that will appeal to you. This youthful energy is an integral part of Galway’s identity, and the city’s mix of culture and fund attracts every type of student.
