Located in the Sharon Township, just 5 miles east of downtown Charlotte NC, the American Academy of Healthcare has been providing excellence in education to men and women in the healthcare field since 2006. Our day and weekend certificate programs include Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Medication Aide, Wound Care and more, with some programs involving clinical internships at select facilities in the Charlotte area. Nursing Assistant & Healthcare Education Programs
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program
Features include:
- Exceeds requirements for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.
- Instructors are Division of Facility Services approved and experienced Registered Nurse Educators.
- Provides classroom and laboratory experiences with the standards of practice of DRHS and provides the knowledge and skills to practice.
- Provides enhanced education in the performance of fundamental skills essential for resident and patient care.
- Provides classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences consistent with the standards of practice of the Division of Facility Services.
- Students are able to sit in the next class day for didactic study and proficiency skills.
- Mock competency testing done after successful completion of the course.
- Prepares the student for the Division of Facility Service approved Nurse Aide I competency evaluation.
Pharmacy Technician Program
This course introduces pharmacy practice and the technician’s role in a variety of pharmacy settings. Topics include medical terminology and abbreviations, drug delivery systems, law and ethics, prescription and medication orders, and the health care system.
Upon completion, students should be able to:
- Explain the role of pharmacy technicians
- Read and interpret drug orders
- Describe quality assurance
- Utilize pharmacy references
Medication Aide Training Program
This course is designed to prepare the student to meet the requirements of the North Carolina Medication Aide Act. The course curriculum includes information regarding medication administration, pharmacology, state rules and regulations, classification of drugs, and documentation of drug administration.
The course focuses on the responsibilities of the medication aide in a skilled care nursing facility. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be eligible to take the written examination administered by North Carolina Health and Human Services Division.
Wound Care Course
This course prepares the graduate to provide direct care, education, and consultation to patients, families, and other healthcare providers for the comprehensive assessment and management of acute and chronic wounds including: surgical wounds, pressure ulcers, venous, arterial, and neuropathic/diabetic ulcers, fistulae, wounds with percutaneous drains or tubes, and select skin care problems.
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the normal structure and function of the skin
- Describe the physiology of wound healing
- Prevention and manage pressure ulcers
- Describe the wound healing process
- Describe the wound assessment
- Explain the stages of wounds
- Describe and treat rashes
- Discuss the principles of topical treatment
- Discuss debridement principles
- Discuss the factors that influence healing
Phlebotomy Training
The purpose of this program is to prepare students for employment as phlebotomists or to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in this occupation.
Content includes:
- Performance of safe and efficient work practices in obtaining adequate and correct blood specimens by capillary or venipuncture on adults, children and neonates
- Maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test to be performed;
- Preparing blood smears;
- Labeling specimens accurately and completely;
- Collecting timed specimens;
- Promoting the comfort and well-being of the patient while performing blood collecting duties;
- Observing safety policies and procedures;
- Medical terminology;
- Emergency procedures including CPR
Health Unit Coordinator
Upon successful completion of this course of study, the learner will:
- List the responsibilities of health unit coordinating and compare related job descriptions.
- Identify clinical and non clinical professions that could be part of a health care team and explain the benefit of their being diverse.
- Know the systems used to deliver patient care, their importance, and describe the team model.
- Describe the coordinator’s work environment and the types of requests made of the coordinator.
- Know the variety of diagnostic and treatment opportunities available and how to make arrangements in an organized and timely manner and other forms of assistance and support available to the patients.
- Explain the management of confidential information, patient rights, care of patients’ records, and admissions and discharge processes.
Maintaining A Home Care Agency Program
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Assist individuals to improve and maintain their health and quality of life
- Promote the individual’s independence
- Enabling individuals to receive care in their own home
- Enable individuals to leave a facility to receive rehabilitation or palliative care at home
- Provide support to the family, which will help them handle an individual's need for care
