Hobart and William Smith Colleges:
Hobart and William Smith Colleges, located in the heart of the Fingerlakes in Geneva, Upstate New York, are small, liberal arts colleges offering Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Teaching degree programs. The Colleges are an accredited university, as recognized by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. At Hobart and William Smith there are no limits to what you can explore and who you can become.
50 percent of HWS students study abroad in one of 28 countries. The mission of the Center for Global Education is to provide students with academically challenging study abroad experiences that foster an in-depth understanding of another culture, with the aim of encouraging them to embrace the concept of global citizenship. Being a responsible, effective citizen of the world involves assuming an active role in one's own community and in the larger world; it requires an understanding of the relationship between actions made locally and globally and a commitment to the betterment of people's lives everywhere. Through our study abroad programs, the Center for Global Education strives to provide students with a transformative learning experience that inspires them to live lives of consequence.
Mission:
Hobart and William Smith Colleges are a student-centered learning environment, globally focused, grounded in the values of equity and service, developing citizens who will lead in the 21st century.
The Colleges’ commitment to these principles was solidified in 1999 when they appointed the then director of the Peace Corps as president of Hobart and William Smith. President Mark D. Gearan has since reinforced the Colleges' commitment to global understanding and study abroad opportunities, community service, and service learning, with the goal of providing these elements through contemporary facilities and state-of-the-art technology.
