Riverside Virtual School, California:
The Riverside Virtual School provides a full-range of rigorous, high-quality online courses for Grade 3-12 students in California. An increasing number of families are considering alternatives to traditional classroom-based instruction for meeting the learning needs of their students. The unique blended learning environment experienced by RVS students also provides access to experiential school activities such as fine and performing arts programs, school-based athletics, links to institutions of higher learning, and community mentor programs.
Part of our vision includes developing partnerships between the Riverside Unified School District and other districts throughout California in order to expand access to high-quality online courses for students in rural schools of the State.
Innovative leadership and planning will allow school districts to offer increased access to Advanced Placement courses, provide opportunities for credit recovery and acceleration, and ensure greater equity of educational opportunity.
- Virtual learning environments encompass new and exciting learning strategies and experiences that are designed to match the learning style of the digital learner. Success with an online learning program requires self-determination, self-discipline, and personal motivation, as well as an ability to balance your time.
- Some students find the online curriculum and instructional methods to be more challenging than that which they have faced in the traditional school setting.
- Riverside Virtual School (RVS) offers many options for students. The RVS learning management system can provide access to semester courses in either accelerated or traditional class formats. Students can catch up on missed credits, take a subject not offered at their home school, solve a scheduling conflict, try a different mode of learning, improve a grade for a previous course, or stay engaged in rigorous learning activities while home-schooled or temporarily home bound.
The Riverside Unified School District assigns students to courses taught by highly trained, certificated teachers that are NCLB compliant and highly qualified in the content areas they teach. Each RVS teacher is a fulltime instructor at one of the comprehensive schools in RUSD.
RVS identifies RUSD teachers who are content area experts in the fields they teach and trains them to deliver instruction via the virtual learning environment. Teachers work closely with students in each course to provide guidance and frequent feedback as they make progress through the curriculum.
Homeschool Online High School Programs for Grades 3-12:

All courses offered at RVS are matched to those offered in Riverside Unified School District’s (RUSD) five comprehensive high schools. Therefore, credits earned in an RVS course (whether in accelerated or traditional format) are equivalent to a high school class.
RVS students earn credit towards their diploma by following the graduation requirements established by the RUSD Board of Education. The RVS staff processes all credits for transfer to the student’s home high school, at the end of each academic period.
Role of the Parent:
A critical aspect of home schooling is the active role parents play in the learning process. As students advance in a college preparatory curriculum, some parents may grow concerned about their ability to provide instruction in certain content areas.
Both curricular and technical support is provided to parents in order to best support their student as they navigate through their individualized course of study. Face-to-face support is provided to all students, the frequency of which is determined by the specific curriculum and the individual needs of the child.
