Miller Homeschool, Philadelphia:
Based in Philadelphia's historic Germantown community, Miller Homeschool provides a non-traditional K-5 education for up to six children at a time in our home environment. We provide the patience, flexibility and special attention that traditional schools are often lacking. Miller offers a solution for parents unable to homeschool themselves and who seek a more personal environment than online education can provide. Since beginning as a family homeschool in 2003, our school has provided the patience, flexibility and special attention that traditional schools are often lacking.
Co-educational Homeschool Program for K-5 Students:Miller Homeschool has a vocabulary-intensive academic program which draws heavily upon vocabulary from classroom literature, math lessons, current science topics, social studies, music and other relevant themes in our accelerated learning environment.
- We utilize the Hake Saxon math program, which has had proven success for our students. Saxon provides a simple, yet thorough, aprroach to learning mathematics using a logical and practical sequence.
- Our reading program utilizes chapter books and thematic literature, incorporating genres such as historical fiction as well as standard fiction and nonfiction works. This program spans across other subject areas as Miller Homeschool views reading from a more global perspective. Reading comprehension workbooks are used to supplement the reading program and to sharpen test-taking skills.
- We currently use the Harcourt science textbook series as our standard science curriculum from which we draw lessons, practice work and experiments. Students are taught environmental responsibility and to "think outside of the textbook" as they explore Planet Earth.
- Our social studies curriculum may be drawn from a variety of diverse literature and media, such as history texts, enrichment books, Time for Kids periodicals and map-study workbooks. We encourage sensitivity and compassion as students study the social history of their country and world.
- Miller Homeschool builds a solid writing foundation for each of its students through use of regular writing activities, which are functional as well as creative. Draft-writing isregularly used to strengthen writing skills.
- Our learning program is supplemented by use of educational media, trips, computer learning and hands-on activities such as science experiments and gardening. Hayes Publishing workbooks are used to supplement our academic program in areas such as spelling, English and math.
- Informative literature, media and trips make up the core of our music/arts instruction and appreciation. Trips to the Kimmel Center, the opera, the Arden Theatre and more are often planned.
- Art activities can be structured or unstructured and tend to be related to academic themes being studied. We find that tying art into science or literature lessons, etc., is most meaningful for our students.
- Physical education at Miller Homeschool consists mainly of unstructured, enjoyable activities that help our children exercise and stay fit. We utilize our backyard playground and garden for recess/gym periods. Our playground is equipped with swings, monkey bars, a slide and a basketball hoop. Students have access to scooters, jump ropes, hop balls and other fitness equipment.
