Job Summary

The Railcar Maintenance Tech Lead is responsible for leading and coordinating railcar and locomotive maintenance, overhaul, and refurbishment projects while serving as the primary point of contact for American Heritage Railways management. This position assists with project planning and execution, oversees daily work assignments, coordinates material procurement, and ensures compliance with company safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary maintenance department point of contact for AHR management regarding project status, maintenance priorities, equipment conditions, and departmental needs.
  • Coordinate procurement of maintenance materials, tools, parts, and supplies, including vendor communication and inventory management.
  • Track and maintain material availability for maintenance and refurbishment projects.
  • Be point of contact with management and Human Resources with accident, injury, and incident investigations, documentation, and follow-up reporting.
  • Promote and enforce company safety policies and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Assist with training maintenance personnel.
  • Perform repairs, maintenance, inspections, overhauls, and refurbishments of historic railroad equipment and locomotives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
  • Primarily work within a railroad environment.
  • Extended periods of time walking or standing.
  • Regular time spent outdoors in all types of weather and in non-climate-controlled railroad equipment and facilities.
  • Ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl and twist continuously.
  • Regular lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
Qualifications Education, Skill and Work Experience Requirements
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with management, employees, volunteers, contractors, vendors, and customers.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience leading projects, crews, or maintenance teams preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and maintenance tasks simultaneously.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision while effectively leading and coordinating the work of others.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, work orders, and project documentation.
  • Working knowledge of diesel engine systems, mechanical systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and electrical systems preferred.
  • Basic welding, metal fabrication, and metalworking skills preferred.
  • Familiarity with woodworking tools, construction methods, and finish carpentry techniques preferred.
  • Knowledge of passenger railcar electrical systems, lighting systems, HVAC, restroom and related installations preferred.
  • Experience operating and maintaining hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and various types of heavy equipment preferred.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, diagrams, blueprints, schematics, and maintenance documentation preferred.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA standards, workplace safety practices, and railroad operating regulations preferred.
  • Experience assisting with incident, accident, or injury investigations, documentation, and corrective action implementation preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound operational decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
