About the Role

Join the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) as a Custodian III; your role will support residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities in state supported living centers. Responsibilities
  • Perform, coordinate, clean, and sanitize state supported living center buildings and resident homes.
  • Provide housekeeping services in a residential setting, including inspection of buildings and equipment.
  • Order and restock supplies and equipment, supporting other custodians as needed.
  • Work under limited supervision with independent judgment.
  • Maintain cleaning supplies, chemicals, equipment, and record usage.
  • Perform minor repairs on buildings and equipment when necessary.
  • Clean, dust, and disinfect restrooms, office surfaces, programming areas, residents’ homes, bedrooms, and other SSLC areas.
  • Collect and dispose of waste/trash regularly.
  • Ensure resident homes/units meet cleanliness, health and safety, and infection control standards.
  • Inspect buildings, identify problem areas, and ensure follow‑up.
  • Assist the Custodian Manager with infection control program, oversee Custodians I and II, and provide training and coaching.
  • Participate in disaster response, recovery, and COOP activation operations.
  • Work irregular hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays as required.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures: dusting, sweeping, and mopping.
  • Knowledge of floor stripping and waxing.
  • Knowledge of restroom and shower stall cleaning and disinfection.
  • Knowledge of inventory control principles.
  • Skill in using custodial materials, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Skill in using and maintaining building maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and walk on hard floors for extended periods.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with co‑workers and patients.
  • Ability to work irregular hours.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days of hire; out‑of‑state license requires a certified driving record.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
  • At least six months paid experience in custodial/housekeeping work (preferred one year).
  • Preferred one year experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities or mental health disorders.
Additional Information
  • Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, HHS LEIE).
  • Males aged 18–25 must register with Selective Service.
  • All employees subject to random drug testing.
  • Flexibility required; possible overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Minimum age 18 for employment at a state‑operated facility.
