The job of Custodian is to provide custodial services at the assigned site; ensuring an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors; performing a variety of special cleaning operations; and assisting in preparing facilities for classroom activities and campus events.
Essential Functions- Arranges furniture and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparation for special events.
- Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds (e.g., classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, locker rooms, multipurpose rooms, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
- Delivers a variety of items (e.g., supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) to appropriate parties within the site.
- Performs summer cleaning (e.g., strip/wax floors, move furniture, paint, windows, etc.) to complete and/or facilitate summer construction.
- Prepares site for daily operations (e.g., opening gates, raising flags, sweeping walkways, etc.) to ensure facilities are operational and hazard‑free.
- Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g., light bulbs, paper towels, soap, etc.) to ensure adequate quantities for daily use.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) by taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Attends meetings, in‑service training, workshops, etc. to gather information required to perform job functions.
- Informs building administration and faculty to provide information and direction regarding activities, safety issues, and/or proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
- Monitors students and staff in and around work areas (e.g., halls, multipurpose rooms, lunch rooms, restrooms, grounds, etc.) to prevent injuries, ensure site safety, and report any issues.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Secures facilities and grounds (e.g., doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc.) to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and/or potential liability.
- Supports other site maintenance staff (e.g., grounds, etc.) to complete site custodial activities.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Skills required include carrying trash containers in excess of 50 gallons, furniture and/or materials in excess of 50 pounds, climbing ladders to clean surfaces, operating equipment used in industrial maintenance (including electrical cleaning equipment and common tools), operating motor vehicles as necessary, and adhering to safety practices.
Knowledge required includes reading and following instructions, and understanding multi‑step written and oral instructions; methods of industrial cleaning; safety practices and procedures.
Abilities required include scheduling activities, using job‑related equipment, working with diverse individuals, following prescribed guidelines for problem solving with data, and operating equipment using standardized methods. Adaptability to changing work priorities, working extended hours, communicating with diverse groups, meeting deadlines, working as part of a team, and consistently attending work are also required.

Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others. Demonstrate a professional work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills to promote a positive image of District 88.
Working Environment
Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and fine finger dexterity. The job requires approximately 3% sitting, 46% walking, and 52% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Job‑related experience desired.
