Maintenance/Custodial Worker

Job SummaryThe Maintenance/Custodial function is responsible for internal and external building maintenance, cleaning and upkeep. This will include, but not limited to: sweeping, mopping, emptying trash, cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming, room set up for meetings and events, etc.
Responsibilities- Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
- Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
- Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal. Empties recycling receptacles into the designated container.
- Performs exterior grounds care (i.e., picking up litter around property, raking, mowing).
- Unlocks doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas.
- Reports needs to Director of Operations, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Performs cleaning functions specific to the needs of AUL facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements, such as special events or community engagements.
- May assist or perform snow removal activities and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Less than high school; no previous experience required but strongly preferred.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- Ability to understand verbal instructions.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Ability to operate vacuums and other related equipment.
- Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
- Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
- Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to understand written and verbal communications.
- Position requires: a) use of power equipment to buff and restore floors and shampoo carpets; b) regular and routine dusting, mopping, vacuuming, emptying trash and cleaning restrooms; and c) routine maintenance to custodial equipment.
- Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
- Must consistently arrive to work on time and accurately perform all assigned duties.
- Must work harmoniously with all AUL staff, visitors, volunteers, and board members.
- Must consistently display a strong work ethic and is able to adhere to all AUL policies and procedures.
- Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
- Prolonged periods of walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and ability to shovel snow & cut grass.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- As AUL has a second floor, ability to walk up and down the stairs throughout the day is necessary.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to perform well in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent organizational skills and close attention to detail.
- Able to work closely and harmoniously with agency staff.
- Basic knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite to create and maintain reports and logs.
