Position: SUPERVISOR, CUSTODIAL SERVICES

SUPERVISOR, CUSTODIAL SERVICES NIGHT SHIFT

Akron Public Schools, Akron, Ohio.

SUMMARY

Assists with supervision of operations in the Custodial Services Department following regulations and guidelines established by the Director of Facility Services. Assumes management responsibility for coordinating building cleanliness, maintenance of school grounds, and ensuring safety of all sites. Accessible for emergency calls and responsive to emergencies during non‑work hours, weekends, and holidays. Secondary management duties include shared supervisory responsibilities for all Facility Services staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid State of Ohio Driver's License.
  • Diploma from an accredited high school or trade school, or GED.
  • Minimum of five years of general building maintenance and repair work, including three years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Knowledge of facilities management, including supervision of custodial staffing and safety precautions of general building maintenance and custodial operations.
  • Flexible and accessible for emergency calls and assistance during non‑work hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to estimate material and personnel needs for custodial and maintenance work.
  • Ability to supervise, establish, and maintain satisfactory work relationships.
  • Knowledge of physical aspects of building facilities and mechanical equipment, including proper care and maintenance of security systems, heating and ventilation systems, geo‑thermal systems, chillers, and low‑pressure steam boilers.
  • Effective supervisory, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, etc.) and Google Applications.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior experience and working knowledge of Munis, Aesop, and FMX Work Order Systems.
  • State of Ohio Low Pressure Boiler Operator's License.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
  • Supervisory responsibilities for 271 custodial employees and occasional shared supervisory responsibilities for all Facility Services staff.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities within organizational policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsible for daily inspections of buildings for cleanliness, safety concerns, snow removal, landscaping, and trash removal; includes routine interior/exterior inspections.
  • Conduct annual outside inspections of all buildings.
  • Arrange substitutes for absent buildings and grounds staff; ensure all buildings are ready for operations.
  • Respond to inquiries, safety concerns, and emergencies concerning daily operations.
  • Conduct supervisory responsibilities such as evaluations, conferences with employees, data collection for purchasing bids, and departmental in‑service meetings.
  • Responsible for vacation authorizations, recording of vacation requests, monitoring usage, and maintaining payroll for custodial staff.
  • Report to and carry out duties assigned by the Director of Facility Services.
GENERAL EXPECTATIONS

Work cooperatively and effectively with members of the public, other employees, related public agency staff, community businesses, and service providers. Maintain accurate and timely record keeping and reports. May be required to drive a motor vehicle with a valid Ohio operator's license, travel within the district and outside, attend meetings, in‑services, and training programs. Must refrain from alcohol or non‑prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace.

WORK

ENVIRONMENT

Office environment, usually quiet, often with interruptions. May visit school buildings and emergency sites, which can be loud. Frequent telephone calls at home in early morning, late evenings, weekends, and holidays requiring immediate action.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Regularly required to talk, hear, walk, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, or crouch; use hands to type, handle, and carry objects; may lift up to 50 pounds. Must use computer and travel to school sites for emergencies.
