Project Title: Civil Rights Interpretation & Trail Intern

Position Summary

The Civil Rights Interpretation & Trail Intern will support the preservation, interpretation, and on-site engagement of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, commemorating the 1965 Voting Rights March that led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

This role focuses on place-based interpretation across the 54-mile trail, connecting visitors directly to the physical landscapes where history occurred. The intern will help bring the trail to life by sharing stories at key locations, supporting walking experiences, and contributing to immersive interpretive content. The intern ensures visitors understand not only the history of the march, but also the physical journey, resistance, and resilience experienced along the route.

Responsibilities

Trail-Based Interpretation & Engagement

  • Deliver interpretive talks at key trail sites (trail markers, stops, and significant locations)
  • Assist with guided walks and on-site storytelling experiences
  • Help visitors understand the geography, distance, and conditions of the march
  • Support mobile and outdoor visitor engagement along the trail

Visitor Services & Orientation

  • Welcome and orient visitors at trail access points and visitor centers
  • Provide maps, directions, and safety guidance for trail exploration
  • Answer visitor questions about the route, history, and significance

Research & Place-Based Storytelling

  • Conduct research on key locations along the trail
  • Develop short interpretive narratives tied to specific trail stops
  • Highlight lesser-known stories, local communities, and participant experiences

Program & Event Support

  • Assist with commemorative walks, anniversary events, and public programs
  • Support logistics for trail-based programming (setup, coordination, safety checks)
  • Enhance visitor engagement during high-traffic events

Trail Monitoring & Documentation

  • Observe and report on visitor usage and engagement along the trail
  • Document trail conditions and visitor experience feedback
  • Support data collection for program improvement

Collaboration & Professional Development

  • Work closely with NPS interpretive staff, trail coordinators, and GYF program managers
  • Participate in weekly check-ins and InternXL professional development sessions
  • Present final project and recommendations
Learning Goals
  • Hands-on experience in trail-based and outdoor interpretation
  • Development of place-based storytelling and public speaking skills
  • Increased knowledge of civil rights history and landscape interpretation
  • Experience in visitor engagement outside traditional visitor centers
  • Professional growth in public history and National Park Service operations

Qualifications
  • Background or interest in history, African American studies, geography, or related field

  • Research and writing skills
