Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead

State Equipment Fleet is looking for a qualified Heavy Duty Mechanic to help keep Alaska moving.

Key Responsibilities
  • Professionally maintain all heavy‑duty and light‑duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other agency vehicles.
  • Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods.
  • Diagnose, maintain, repair and modify key systems including transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems (air and electrical).

  • Mechanical
    :
    Knowledge of machines and tools, including design, use, repair and maintenance.
  • Flexibility
    :
    Open to change, adapts quickly to new information, changing conditions or unexpected obstacles.
  • Vehicle Maintenance
    :
    Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts and systems, including design, use, repair and maintenance.
  • Self‑Management
    :
    Sets realistic personal goals, demonstrates initiative and commitment, works with minimal supervision and is motivated to achieve results.

Working Environment

The position is located at 720 Main Street, Haines, AK. Traveling in small aircraft to maintain equipment in remote locations is possible and may involve day trips and overnight stays.

Requirements

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Required
:
Candidates must hold a Class A CDL. Hire approval is conditional upon obtaining a Class A Alaska CDL within 120 days of hire and signing an agreement to this effect.

Employees must comply with DOT & PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and cannot begin work in a CDL position until a pre‑employment drug test is confirmed.

Tool Allowance

Employees provide their own hand tools and receive a bi‑weekly tool allowance as determined by the LTC contract.
