Job Description

JOB PURPOSE: To maintain the physical upkeep and cleanliness of school buildings, grounds, and furnishings.

Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Daily
  • Keeps interior and exterior of buildings clean including sidewalks, driveways, play area, and grounds.
  • Clean entry glass
  • Clean litter around building and parking areas
  • Trash and recycle pick-up
  • Change kitchen and coffee station liners
  • Clean, disinfect restroom fixtures
  • Restock restroom supplies
  • Clean tables, counters, and sinks in break rooms
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains
  • Sweep, wet mop, disinfect restroom floors
  • Dust mop all hard surface floors
  • Vacuum entry mats and carpet in traffic areas
  • Sweep and clean loading dock area
  • Sweep and clean building entry
  • Vacuum traffic areas
  • Clean gym and multipurpose room
  • Cleans all white boards
  • Remains on the school premises during school hours and during non-school hours as authorized
  • Assumes responsibility for opening and closing the building each school day and ensuring all doors and windows are secured and lights turned off
Weekly
  • Low dusting below 5 feet
  • Sweep and vacuum stairwells
  • Vacuum non-traffic areas
Monthly
  • High dusting above five feet
  • Detail vacuum
  • Wet mop stairs
Annually
  • Clean ceiling vents
  • Clean and dust furniture
  • Clean window blinds
  • Clean fluorescent fixtures and diffusers
  • Wash all windows on both inside and out at least once a year
Twice Annually
  • Extraction of all carpet areas
  • Wet scrub and wax floors
As Needed
  • Unplug drains
  • Deliver recycle and garbage barrels
  • Clean spills
  • Clean up vandalism
  • Change trash liners
  • Shovel and apply ice melt to walks and steps as needed
  • Checks daily to ensure exit doors are open and panic bars working
  • Assumes responsibility for pick up and delivery of district mail
  • Sweeps classroom daily and dusts furniture
  • Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects restroom and locker room floors daily
  • Cleans halls after school each day
  • Keeps the grounds free of rubbish and performs other tasks necessary to maintain grounds
  • Keeps all floors clean
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required
  • Complies with local laws for storage and disposal of trash
  • Removes vandalism writing on walls
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Maintenance
  • Makes minor building repairs
  • Reports needed repairs promptly
  • Reports immediately to Supervisor any damage or vandalism
  • Remains on premises during authorized hours
  • Assumes responsibility for opening/closing building
  • Keeps inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel
  • Requisition s replacements in advance

Qualifications

  • Good physical condition.
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s License.
  • Ability to live and work in a cross-cultural, rural Alaskan environment.
  • Ability to carry out successfully the duties described below.
  • Ability to follow directions.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

  • Decision-making ability and ability to work independently. Ability to plan, schedule, and prioritize work.
  • Computer software proficiency including Microsoft Office and email.
  • Interpersonal skills to courteously and effectively assist individuals. Ability to communicate with a variety of people.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication.
  • Willingness to perform various job-related duties as situations require; strong teamwork and cooperation.
  • Awareness of district requirements, Board of Education practices, Alaska State Laws, and Department of Education regulations.

Education and/or

Experience:

High School diploma or GED

Language

Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as software operating and training instructions, and technical procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before supervisors and district employees. Ability to speak Yupik preferred.

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as bank deposits and purchase requisitions.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
