Job Overview
Purpose:
correctly locate, identify and mark underground utility, gas, and water lines.
- Locate, identify and mark underground utility, gas, and water lines/mains.
- Read, analyze, interpret and draft plans and maps.
- Organize daily ticket routing to achieve maximum efficiency; review tickets before and after all locates.
- Operate department vehicle safely and lawfully.
- Maintain and store records of locates for the appropriate span of time.
- Identify and report faulty leaks to appropriate staff.
- Operate a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools including a pipe horn and cable locator, metal detector/locator, shovel, probe rod, sledge hammer, striping machine/equipment, level survey rod, computer, fax machine, calculator, etc.
- Perform general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition (e.g., inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning work areas, etc.); monitor equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; report faulty equipment.
- Prepare and/or complete various forms, correspondence, reports, worksheets, timesheets, and other documents.
- Receive various forms, reports, worksheets, maps, or other documentation; review, complete, process, forward and/or maintain as appropriate.
- Communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio; provide information; take and relay messages; respond to requests for service.
- Respond to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
- Provide emergency assistance and/or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- High school diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years previous experience and/or technical training in utility construction and/or engineering plans.
- Wastewater Class III Collection Systems Certification desirable.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.
- Physical ability: tasks involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and that generally involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
- Sensory requirements: ability to perceive and discern colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, depths, textures; visual perception and discernment.
- Environmental factors: tasks risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as high pressure gas & water lines, fiber optic cables, insects, poisonous plants, animals, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents and chemicals, electric currents, disease, raw sewage, blood, or pathogenic substances.
