Utility Locate Technician

Overview

The Position

The purpose of this classification is to correctly locate, identify and mark underground utility, gas, and water lines.

• Locates, identifies and marks underground utility, gas, and water lines/mains.
• Reads, analyzes, interprets and drafts plans and maps.
• Organizes daily ticket routing to achieve maximum efficiency; reviews tickets before and after all locates.
• Operates department vehicle safely and lawfully.
• Maintains and stores records of locates for the appropriate span of time.
• Identifies and reports faulty leaks to appropriate staff.
• Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools including a pipe horn and cable locator, metal detector/locator, shovel, probe rod, sledge hammer, striping machine/equipment, level survey rod, computer, fax machine, calculator, etc.
• Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition (e.g. inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning work areas, etc.); monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
• Prepares and/or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, work sheets, timesheets, and other documents.
• Receives various forms, reports, work sheets, maps, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards and/or maintains as appropriate.
• Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.
• Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
• Provides emergency assistance and/or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.
• Performs other related duties as required.

• High school diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years previous experience and/or technical training in utility construction and/or engineering plans;
  Wastewater Class III Collection Systems Certification desirable.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discern colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, depths, textures. Some tasks require visual perception and discernment.

Environmental Factors: Tasks risk exposure to such adverse environmental conditions as high pressure gas & water lines, fiber optic cables, insects, poisonous plants, animals, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents and chemicals, electric currents, disease, raw sewage, blood, or pathogenic substances.
