Overview
The purpose of this classification is to operate light equipment and perform manual work functions associated with the construction, maintenance and repair of city grounds, parks, streetlights, or right-of-ways per assigned department.
Responsibilities- Operate light equipment and perform manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of city grounds, parks, streetlights, or right-of-ways.
- Operate equipment, machinery and tools, including dump truck, bucket truck, motor grader, backhoe, boom axle, forklift, various mowers, tractors, trencher, vibrator, pay loader, hydro seeder, pressure washer, tiller, weed eaters, leaf blower, chipper, chain saw, shovels, rakes, and related power and hand tools.
- Perform manual work functions in construction, maintenance, and repair of recreational grounds and facilities; move and repair equipment, paint buildings and walls, maintain gym, collect trash, and perform related tasks.
- Line ball parks/ball fields, install fences and playground equipment, seed/mow grass, maintain irrigation systems, apply insecticide/herbicide, maintain sports turf, and report landscape and insect problems.
- Install, maintain, and repair city street and security lights such as changing bulbs, installing and repairing cable.
- Maintain right-of-ways, ditches, and holding ponds, which may include trimming trees, removing stumps and debris, mowing grass, and performing related tasks.
- Perform routine maintenance on machinery, equipment and tools such as changing tires, inspecting, greasing, cleaning equipment, maintaining fluid levels, changing blades, calibrating equipment, and performing related tasks.
- Prepare reports, logs, and invoices; forward to appropriate individual.
- Train and supervise part-time staff; ensure compliance with standard safety procedures.
- Assist with acquisition of inventory; pick up and deliver supplies and equipment to/from work sites.
- Operate a two‑way radio in the performance of duties.
Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications- High school diploma or GED required.
- At least one (1) year of previous experience and/or training operating light equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements is preferred.
- In lieu of a valid Georgia CDL, a minimum of five (5) years of experience operating light equipment is required.
- Ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, or summarize data and/or information and perform subsequent actions related to these computational operations.
- Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Ability to start, stop, operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Verbal aptitude: ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information.
- Mathematical aptitude: ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, calculate decimals and percentages, and interpret basic graphs.
- Functional reasoning: ability to apply principles of rational systems, interpret instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form, and exercise independent judgment.
- Situational reasoning: ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
- Physical ability: tasks involve moderately physically demanding work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Sensory requirements: perception of sound, odors, depth, textures, and visual cues or signals.
- Environmental factors: exposure to adverse conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, noise, machine vibrations, electric currents, or toxic agents.
