The Northwest Region of the New Mexico Department of Health encompasses seven counties:
San Juan, McKinley, Cibola, Sandoval, Valencia, Torrance, and Bernalillo. This region includes a dynamic mix of urban, rural, frontier, and tribal communities, offering a unique and rewarding environment for public health professionals committed to equity, service, and innovation. This position supports the Department of Health to provide for community services including STI/HIV screening and treatment, needle exchange and safer-use supplies, tuberculosis screening and treatment, immunizations, substance use disorder treatment, and comprehensive family planning services, including emergency contraceptives.

Why

does the job exist?

This Maintenance & Repair Worker-A position exists in the Northwest Region to support the day-to-day building maintenance needs and minor repairs of the Northwest Region Public Health Offices as well as maintaining the Northwest Region fleet of vehicles to include 2 mobile health units. Ensuring that the vehicles are properly maintained, in safe working order and ready for use at all times.

The mobile health units require maintenance similar to a recreational vehicle (RV) and must be ready for deployment to deliver essential public health services across the region. Travel throughout the state of New Mexico, primarily within the Northwest Region is required.

How does it get done?
  • Routine Maintenance of Facilities - Perform day-to-day maintenance tasks such as minor repairs, fixing locks, light painting, minor plumbing, and electrical troubleshooting to ensure that the facilities are operational and safe. Work with building owners to regularly inspect building systems (lighting, HVAC, plumbing) and address any maintenance needs or elevate more complex issues to specialists.
  • Furniture Assembly and Moving
    - Assemble new furniture and equipment for offices and work spaces as needed. Assist in relocating or rearranging office furniture and equipment to accommodate staff moves, reconfigurations, or special projects.
  • Vehicle and Mobile Unit Maintenance - Maintaining fleet and performing regular maintenance on mobile health units, including servicing mechanical components, cleaning, and ensuring all equipment on board is functional and ready for use. Address any urgent repair needs related to the mobile units and coordinate with external service providers for more complex repairs when necessary.
  • Miscellaneous Support Duties - Assist with general building upkeep, including maintaining grounds, snow removal, and ensuring entrances are safe and accessible. Provide logistical support for events or special initiatives, such as setting up equipment or helping with inventory management.

This position directly supports Northwest Region program and clinical staff to ensure they can effectively and efficiently provide essential public health services to the constituents of the State of New Mexico in ensuring health equity and promoting health and well-being for all people in New Mexico.

Ideal Candidate

An ideal candidate would be a self-starter, ability to work independently and problem solve. Experience in general maintenance and repairs to include but not limited to general electrical, plumbing, painting and carpentry. Experience in proper use and maintenance of tools to include but not limited to hand tools (screwdrivers, level, hammers, utility knives, etc.), small power tools (drills, impact driver, circular saw, grinder, cut off tool).

Experience in managing and maintaining fleet to include cars, trucks and recreational vehicles (RV).

High School Diploma or Equivalent and one (1) year of experience in general buildings and grounds maintenance, custodial duties, construction, or appliance repair. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.
