Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Maintenance Worker. The successful candidate will perform a variety of semiskilled tasks involving the preparation of sign base materials, application of sheeting, and reclamation of salvageable materials or fabrication of traffic signs.

Essential Functions
  • Operates fairly complex and expensive machinery.
  • Sorts, classifies, resizes, straightens, strips, and stores salvageable sign materials returned from the districts.
  • Performs preventative and functional maintenance on shop equipment.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires six months experience performing a variety of semiskilled manual tasks in the maintenance of highways, buildings, grounds, waterways, or in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefers skill in the operation of power tools and equipment.
  • Prefers working knowledge of sign standards and designs.
  • Prefers ability to work from drawing and shop work orders.
Conditions of Employment
  • Requires successful completion of a background investigation.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires ability to perform arduous labor.
