Job Description
The Building Engineer I is established for the purpose/s of operating and maintaining an attractive, healthy, safe and comfortable facility for students, staff and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner. This is a 12-month, 240 day, Support position.
Qualifications- Education: Targeted job-related education that meets organization's prerequisite requirements.
- Certificates & Licenses: NIULPE 6th Class, DC 6th Class or Maryland 3rd Class Operating Engineers License.
- Experience: Three (3) years of progressive experience with the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.
- Arranges furnishings and equipment (e.g. teacher moves, relocating classrooms, computer set up, etc.) in preparation of meetings, classroom activities, and special events.
- Attends meetings (e.g. workshops, in-service, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information.
- Communicates with principal and supervisor on a daily basis to discuss work planned for that day.
- Coordinates requirements for special events (e.g. scheduling special events, meeting, building and facility safety, etc.) to ensure availability of facilities and/or equipment required.
- Informs school personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders to provide necessary information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and/or complying with health and safety regulations.
- Inspects school facilities to ensure site is suitable for safe operations and maintained in an attractive and clean condition, identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
- Maintains a variety of documents (e.g. building inventories, building or equipment warranty, MSDS sheets, inspections, etc.) for an up-to-date reference and audit trail for compliance.
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance on heating and air conditioning equipment (e.g. checking fluid levels, condition of belts and pulleys, oiling/greasing motors, replacing filters, cleaning and painting machinery, etc.) and regulates individual climate control units for satisfactory climate control in an efficient manner.
- Prepares documentation (e.g. preventive maintenance schedule for facility, work and vacation schedules, work orders, requisitions, daily and overtime slips, annual budget requests, work orders, etc.) to provide written support and/or convey information.
- Prepares facilities for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, raising flag, minor repairs, etc.) to ensure facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
- Recommends policies, procedures and/or actions (e.g. equipment, products, vendors, etc.) that promote efficient operation of maintenance/custodial services and regulatory compliance.
- Repairs or submits work orders, as appropriate on facilities and systems (e.g. boilers, locks, doors, electrical equipment fixtures, etc.) to ensure that facilities and systems are in safe operating condition.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, security/fire alarms, etc.) and takes appropriate action to maintain a functioning educational environment.
- This position is considered emergency essential and the employee will be required to report to work regardless of weather or school conditions.
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 70% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and in some hazardous conditions.
Compensation- Salary Placement for this position is Grade 14; $20.10 to $24.73 hourly, determined by The ACPS Support Staff Salary Scale
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
