Position Overview

The Maintenance Staff member is responsible for performing general maintenance, repair, and upkeep of facility systems, buildings, residential units, and grounds within a federally contracted ICE Residential Facility in Alexandria, Louisiana.
This position supports the Maintenance Supervisor in ensuring the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of all facility spaces, including residential housing units, common areas, mechanical spaces, and exterior grounds. Work includes preventive maintenance, corrective repairs, routine inspections, and response to urgent maintenance needs in a 24/7 residential environment.
This role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, structured environment serving families and individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds while maintaining professionalism, safety, and attention to detail at all times.
Preference given to licensed electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and experienced carpenter/handyman.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions

Facility Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform general maintenance and repair tasks on facility systems, including HVAC support, plumbing, electrical, lighting, doors, fixtures, flooring, and structural components.
- Assist with preventive maintenance activities and routine inspections of buildings, residential units, and common areas.
- Respond to maintenance work orders and support timely resolution of facility repair needs.
- Assist in maintaining fire safety systems, emergency lighting, backup power systems, and related facility infrastructure .
Facility Upkeep & Inspections
- Conduct routine walkthroughs of assigned areas to identify maintenance issues, safety concerns, or repair needs.
- Maintain cleanliness and functionality of mechanical rooms, storage areas, and work spaces.
- Support upkeep of indoor and outdoor areas, including minor landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks.
Safety & Emergency Response
- Respond promptly to urgent maintenance requests, equipment failures, and facility emergencies.
- Support emergency preparedness activities, including response to weather events, power outages, and facility disruptions.
- Follow OSHA standards, safety procedures, and facility-specific protocols at all times.
- Report safety hazards, damaged equipment, or operational concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Tools, Equipment & Materials
- Properly use, maintain, and store hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
- Assist with inventory tracking, organization, and storage of maintenance supplies and materials.
- Follow proper handling procedures for chemicals, hazardous materials, and maintenance products.
Collaboration & Facility Support
- Work collaboratively with maintenance team members, operations staff, janitorial staff, and other departments to support facility operations.
- Provide support to ensure uninterrupted residential services in a 24/7 environment.
- Maintain a professional, respectful, and culturally responsive approach when interacting with staff and residents.
Required Qualifications &
Core Competencies:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical training, vocational education, or certification in maintenance, construction trades, or related field preferred.
- Minimum one (1) to three (3) years of experience in general maintenance, building operations, construction, or facilities support preferred.
- Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general building repair techniques.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions and established procedures.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, structured operational environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Desired
Skills:
- Experience in residential, institutional, healthcare, corrections, hospitality, shelter, or government facilities preferred.
- Basic OSHA or safety training certification preferred.
- Experience supporting preventive maintenance programs or work order systems.
