Job Description Overview

The instructional aide is responsible for providing assistance to instructional programs by supporting the teacher in achieving educational objectives. This involves working with individual students or small groups to help them reach the skill levels of the class as a whole, and ensuring a well‑organized, smoothly functioning classroom environment that maximizes the benefits of the instructional program and available resources.

Qualifications
  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Paraprofessional Educator Licensure
  • Teaching Certificate Preferred
  • Teaching Experience Preferred
Responsibilities
  • Executes instructional activities with individual students or small groups following teacher direction and demonstration.
  • Provides assistance to students during special classes (art, music, etc.).
  • Supervises and assists students in special education and general education classes.
  • Assists in preparation of materials for class, classroom activities, assignments, and locating supplementary materials from the school library and other resource areas.
  • Implements behavior management programs designed by teachers and/or school psychologists.
  • Counts and records specific student behaviors; administers procedures in the Positive Behavior Support plan (PBIS).
  • Monitors student use of instructional equipment.
  • Provides general maintenance of equipment, including cleaning and disinfecting.
  • Serves as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of classroom teachers.
  • Assists students leaving and entering transportation vehicles, and accompanies students to and from the classroom.
  • Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills.
  • Assists with student use of equipment.
  • Assists students with activities of daily living such as eating, grooming, bathing, and hygiene related to toileting.
  • Monitors the incidence and prevalence of designated health problems or medical conditions.
  • Observes and intervenes to redirect inappropriate behavior.
  • Assists, monitors, and guides the student to pay attention, participate in activities, and complete tasks.
  • Establishes and maintains productive working relationships with staff, business associates, and the general community.
  • Works on multiple tasks and prioritizes appropriately.
  • Recognizes areas of concern related to student issues and recommends appropriate solutions.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Exercises initiative and makes independent decisions to reschedule work to meet deadlines or handle emergency work.
  • Supports students' developmental needs both instructionally and behaviorally.
  • Assists students with toileting needs.
Physical Requirements
  • Requires physical strength to occasionally assist in lifting or carrying students.
  • May require pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Requires sitting, standing, and walking for long periods of time.
  • Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
  • Employee must have the physical capabilities to perform all job functions.
