Job Summary
The Unassigned Custodian cleans school building interiors, and grounds within Anchorage School District schools. This position is not assigned to a single location but travels between locations as needed to fill vacancies. The shift is eight hours per day, three days per week, but can vary based on circumstances. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
Job Requirements
The following are required:
* A high school diploma or equivalent. Two years of related work experience may be considered in lieu of the education requirement.
* Ability to read and interpret documents such as Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
* Able to work any shift, including the morning shift beginning at 6:30 am, the evening shift beginning at 3:30 pm, or the night shift beginning at 4:30 pm.
* A valid Alaska driver's license.
* Reliable transportation and be able to travel to any location within the Anchorage School District as needed, from Girdwood School to Mirror Lake Middle School and any in between, and may occasionally travel between locations during a single shift.
* Ability to reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing up to 50 pounds.
* Ability to use a backpack style vacuum cleaner daily.
* The Anchorage School District requires that the selected applicant for this position be given a conditional offer of employment contingent upon successfully passing a post offer/pre-employment physical capacities assessment. to view the physical capacities assessment requirements for this position.
The following are preferred:
* Six months of successful responsible custodial experience.
* Knowledge of the safe and effective use of common cleaning equipment.
* Ability to use simple math and dilution ratios to properly dilute concentrated chemicals.
* Ability to work independently.
Essential Job Functions
* Sweeps, vacuums, mops, scrubs, floor surfaces.
* Dusts, washes, various fixtures and surfaces.
* Cleans and disinfects restroom toilet bowls, sinks, walls, etc.
* Assists in securing the facility before exiting, including turning out lights and locking doors and windows.
* Watches the building to help prevent vandalism or damage.
* Reports needed repairs to facility fixtures or custodial equipment to supervisor.
* Operates electrical custodial equipment safely and effectively and cleans this equipment after use.
* Safely and effectively works with different chemicals such as detergents, disinfectants, and sanitizers.
* Cleans carpeting by various methods such as bonnet, extraction, etc. Spot cleans carpets as necessary.
* Performs heavy lifting while moving equipment, chemicals, furniture, etc., as necessary.
* Maintains school grounds by removing trash from the school grounds as needed.
* Clears building sidewalks by sweeping and/or removing snow for activities/evening access.
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.
The employee must manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.
While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The use of a backpack style vacuum cleaner is required.
