Work Day: 10 hours per day/4 days per week

Full time, 1.0 FTE

Salary: M-8, $29.60 to $34.03 per hour, DOE

Job Summary:

The Mechanical/Welding Specialist is responsible for the maintenance of mechanical equipment and welding within Anchorage School District facilities. The location of the work station is subject to contract language concerning shift location/bids. Maintenance employees work a 4/10 schedule with weekends and holidays off. This position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements:

The following are required:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
  • Minimum of four years of experience within the past six years in mechanical systems such as sheet metal, welding, and machine shop. Work experience must evidence ability to perform such tasks.
  • Must obtain an Alaska class B commercial driver's license with a general knowledge test endorsement within 6 months of hire.
  • The Anchorage School District requires that the selected applicant for this position be given a conditional offer of employment contingent upon successfully passing a post offer/pre-employment physical capacities assessment.  to view the physical capacities assessment requirements for this position.
  • The following are preferred:

  • A current certified structural welder certificate.
  • A journeyman sheet metal certificate.
  • Essential Job Functions:

  • Interprets and works from plans, prints, specifications, and established maintenance procedures.
  • Writes reports when needed.
  • Proficiently uses appropriate computer applications for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Works with standard mechanical equipment including, but not limited to, wood and metal shop equipment, food service equipment, printing machinery, office furniture, overhead doors, fire doors, hoists, and cranes.
  • Maintains knowledge of equipment and materials used in the manufacture of metal products.
  • Assembles, dismantles, and repairs machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to routinely work at heights over 20 feet.
  • Installs ventilation changes as needed.
  • Repairs shop equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance as needed.
  • Lays out and bends sheet metal as required for assigned work.
  • Orders required material for assigned work.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others.
  • Works cooperatively with others and within established maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Other related duties as assigned
  • Physical /Mental Demands:
    The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.

    The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
