Position Summary

The Facilities Care Specialist provides direct facilities, maintenance, custodial, and operational support across AWAIC’s administrative offices, emergency shelter, and transitional housing facilities. This position helps ensure AWAIC’s properties, grounds, vehicles, and equipment remain clean, sanitary, safe, functional, and well maintained. Primary responsibilities include routine and deep cleaning, sanitation, minor repairs and maintenance, responding to facility work requests, preventative maintenance, groundskeeping, snow and ice management, vehicle care, supply management, and general facility upkeep.

The Facilities Care Specialist works closely with the Facilities Manager to identify maintenance and safety concerns, complete assigned projects, coordinate facility needs and support the day-to-day operation of AWAIC’s properties.

This position requires practical problem-solving skills, attention to detail, initiative, reliability, adaptability, safety awareness, and a commitment to trauma-informed and mission-centered work.

Essential Functions Custodial Responsibilities
  • Cleans and sanitizes common areas, offices, bathrooms, and other assigned spaces throughout AWAIC facilities.
  • Empties trash and recycling, maintains refuse areas, and performs dump and recycling runs as needed.
  • Inventories, replenishes, and organizes janitorial supplies and disposable products.
  • Responds to internal work orders and performs scheduled deep and seasonal cleaning.
  • Maintains clean, safe, and accessible grounds, pathways, parking areas, entrances, and exterior spaces, including seasonal groundskeeping and basic winter maintenance.
  • Handles, stores, and disposes of cleaning chemicals and hazardous materials safely and maintains required OSHA and safety documentation.
  • Sets up and cleans up spaces for meetings, events, and other agency activities as needed.
  • Participates in facility walk-throughs and coordinates assigned custodial or groundskeeping services with vendors and contractors.
Facilities Responsibilities
  • Responds to work orders and works with the Facilities Manager to identify, prioritize, and resolve maintenance and facility needs.
  • Performs general building upkeep and minor repairs, including painting, basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical tasks, pressure washing, and similar maintenance.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on building systems, shelter kitchen equipment, and other facility equipment.
  • Identifies and addresses or reports maintenance concerns, needed repairs, and potential safety hazards.
  • Researches and requisitions replacement parts, materials, tools, and maintenance supplies as directed.
  • Maintains clean, organized, and safe maintenance areas, tools, equipment, and work spaces.
  • Participates in safety drills and inspections and coordinates assigned maintenance work with vendors and contractors.
  • Supports agency deliveries, loading and unloading, events, facility projects, and other operational needs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a current State of Alaska Driving License and maintenance of a clean driving record.
  • Ability to clear and maintain stringent federal, state, and local background clearances.
Minimum Experience
  • 1 year janitorial and groundskeeping experience
  • 3 years general facilities maintenance experience for both commercial and residential buildings including painting, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
  • Proficient use of computers and standard office equipment, excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and the ability to prioritize workload to meet deadlines is required.
  • Possession of a current State of Alaska driver’s license required.
