SUMMARY

The On Call – Substitute Custodian position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of district buildings and grounds. This role performs a wide range of custodial tasks, with some limited maintenance tasks needed. Works with staff to provide a clean and safe environment to ensure positive working and learning experiences at the Washtenaw ISD. This position is scheduled to work as needed Monday – Friday with hours ranging from 6:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The start time and building location can vary upon the need.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity, social justice, and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities.

  • Engages in reflection and ongoing learning and development on critical concepts and terms identified in the Washtenaw ISD Educational Equity Policy including concepts such as cultural proficiency, racial equity, and systemic and structural inequities.
  • Performs opening and/or closing procedures of the WISD buildings as required, including but not limited to disarming/ar​ming the alarm system, unlocking/locking various interior and exterior doors.
  • Cleans floors on a regular and as-needed basis, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and scrubbing.
  • Performs restorative maintenance, scrubs, waxes and polishes hard floors on an as needed basis.
  • Cleans classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, hallways, lobbies, staff lounges, restrooms, corridors, common areas, and other work areas and surfaces on a regular and as‑needed basis.
  • Vacuums, spot cleans, extracts carpets, cleans rugs, and upholstered furniture as needed.
  • Cleans and dusts furniture, exhibit cases, fixtures, windows, doors, trim and related furnishings.
  • Clears or shovels snow and debris from walks at building entrances and salts icy walks as necessary.
  • Sweeps dirt from building sidewalks on an as‑needed basis.
  • Collects and disposes of trash and recycling on a regular and as‑needed basis.
  • Cleans restrooms daily and restocks supplies such as soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and replacing can liners.
  • Checks restrooms regularly during the workday to ensure cleanliness and supply levels; performs cleaning and restocking on as‑needed basis.
  • Maintains a clean and organized warehouse and work area – including storage/custodial closet area.
  • Monitors the consumption, storage, usage and disposition of all hospitality supplies, cleaning supplies, and equipment. Communicates needs, in advance, to appropriate WISD administrator to ensure adequate stock is maintained on an on‑going basis.
  • Responds promptly to spills, accidents, or other urgent cleaning needs.
  • Reports to the appropriate administrator, on a regular basis, the status of custodial and minor maintenance requests.
  • Assists with deliveries, loading and unloading of items as necessary.
  • Maintains and operates all equipment necessary to perform all assigned tasks.
  • Follows written work schedule.
  • Follows all safety procedures.
  • Works with standard custodial chemicals and finishes for cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection.
  • Performs minor maintenance tasks such as plunging toilets, changing light bulbs, cleaning roof drains, replacing ceiling tiles, etc.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Reports daily to Facilities Assistant.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
WORK SCHEDULE
  • On call/ as needed.
  • Hours may include morning or evening, Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
  • No guaranteed minimum hours.
