Job Title
Maintenance I / Maintenance II (Union Local #320)
Job SummaryThis position is responsible for routine maintenance of city streets, storm sewers, the dam, parks, playgrounds, and other city property. The role may be assigned as Maintenance I or Maintenance II based on qualifications.
Key Responsibilities- Operate equipment such as skid‑steer, paint striper, zero‑turn mower, power tamper, and walk‑behind concrete/blacktop saw.
- Install or repair irrigation lines, catch basins, street signs, and perform blacktop patching.
- Operate snow removal equipment including MT trackless, walk‑behind snowblower, and pickup with articulating V‑plow.
- Perform routine maintenance in parks and on streets, storm sewers, and the dam.
- Maintain athletic fields and facilities, including set‑up, striping/layout, and game preparations (softball, football, lacrosse, skating).
- Perform cemetery maintenance tasks such as opening/closing graves, lifting markers, and mulching leaves.
- Complete additional maintenance tasks as assigned, particularly in emergency situations or to balance seasonal workloads.
- Adhere to scheduled hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Basic mechanical ability to operate a wide variety of equipment, including paint striper, power tamper, chainsaws, construction equipment, and zero‑turn mowers.
- At least one year of employment experience performing manual labor tasks in a similar work setting (e.g., turf maintenance, landscaping, street maintenance, irrigation systems).
- Must be able to work scheduled hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- Ready to assume standby (on‑call) or call‑in status when necessary.
- Capable of working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Must wear safety equipment as required and follow established safety practices.
- Creates a favorable public image and communicates effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
- Willing to exercise initiative, discretion, and independent judgment over non‑significant matters.
- Has a valid MN CDL Class B with tanker and air brakes endorsement, or ability to obtain one within six months of advancement to Maintenance II. Driver’s license must be unrestricted and have a satisfactory driving record.
- Passes a pre‑employment drug screen, background check, and medical evaluation.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, with or without special accommodations.
- Standard performance rating and attendance record required for the most recent position.
- Experience with a municipality, county, or state in a similar maintenance role.
- Current herbicide/fungicide applicator license.
- Arborist, forestry, or horticulture education or experience.
- Landscape construction experience or trade skills (plumbing, carpentry, welding, concrete).
- Heavy equipment operation experience.
