WORK LOCATION: 2306 Laura Duncan Road, Apex, NC 27502 USA

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm. Some nights, weekends, and special events may be required.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

Performs intermediate work leading a crew of Athletic and Grounds Workers and Specialists in the maintenance of parks, greenways, athletic fields and related recreational properties. An employee in this class provides leadership to a crew including work assignment, on the job training, quality control and performance coaching. The employee serves as team leader participating in the work of the crew and assuring work is completed safely and according to departmental standards.

The employee also operates various equipment and assists the crew in daily activities, including performing maintenance and servicing of equipment used. Work also includes completing work orders; providing input into hiring decisions, coaching and training new employees, and providing input into disciplinary actions. The employee is subject to hazards associated with parks maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, pesticides and other chemicals, odors, dusts, mists, and oils.

Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated based on discussion, review of work orders and observation of work while in progress or upon completion.

This position reports to the Athletics & Grounds Supervisor. Requires moderate supervision on work guided by policies and precedents.

Limited supervisor responsibilities by assigning daily tasks or acting as a lead for others in the role to ask questions or get help to solve problems.

A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:

  • Supervises and participates in playing field maintenance and repair responsibilities including creating and updating maintenance and field preparation schedules based on athletic game and practice schedules; ensures that all fields meet requirements for the activity to be played on it; assigns employees to complete field preparation; makes sure fields are completed and playable by game time; upkeep of scoreboards and lighting for fields;

    keeps supplies on hand to complete field preparation and makes budget request for athletic supplies and materials.
  • Provides crew leadership including work assignment, coaching, training and orientation of new staff and on-the-job training and development; provides input into hiring, performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
  • Completes work orders for tasks performed.
  • Leads other employees and participates in various activities related to grounds and athletic field maintenance to include mowing, trimming, edging, spraying, blowing, seeding, planting, fertilizing, mulching and irrigation, and/or athletic and court field preparation.
  • Oversees work of staff and ensures that equipment operation and tool use is performed safely and in an appropriate, timely manner to complete assigned task; reports or repairs missing or damaged pieces or equipment; transports equipment from site to site.
  • Provides information to the public regarding the work of the unit.
  • Coordinates various special staffing arrangements; plans work and works with supervisors/leaders to assure safe work that meets standards; areas coordinated include community service, scout, volunteer and church groups; tracks volunteer hours.
  • Operates equipment including backhoes, tractors, excavators, gators, truck and trailer, hand tools, chainsaws, blowers and weed eaters.
  • Checks equipment to ensure proper operation and troubleshoots problems; performs minor maintenance and coordinates larger repairs with Fleet Maintenance.
  • Performs related duties as required.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Position requires a High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of three (3) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

CPR, AED and First Aid Certification.
