Position Summary

The Engineer provides leadership support for custodial and preventative maintenance operations performed on 2nd shift. The position has responsibilities for conducting building operations, custodial cleanliness, minor maintenance and activity support. Provides leadership over the district’s day‑to‑day operations in their assigned building by maintaining a clean, sanitary, orderly and safe workplace. Engineers perform all aspects of preventative maintenance, light mechanical and cleaning operations completing proper forms and schedules, operation of equipment in a safe manner.

Oversee custodians who maintain an assigned cleaning area and perform to standards of care established by the Office of Operations.

Essential Functions
  • Prioritize work orders; assign duties and work orders; outline work methods; direct work in process; train staff; review completed work; monitor absences; conduct employee evaluations and provide ongoing formative feedback; take or recommend disciplinary action as needed.
  • Collaborate with supervisors to ensure work performed does not interrupt instruction or school/office operations. Attend emergencies when necessary following established protocols.
  • Order necessary supplies following district procurement procedures and maintain accurate up‑to‑date inventory records. Instruct staff on proper procedures for storing, utilizing and documenting inventory. Advise and make recommendations on cost of services for equipment and projects to ensure effective and efficient resource utilization.
  • Support the effective and efficient operation of the RUSD electronic facility management system, ensuring dashboard metrics reflect best practices and current district needs, ongoing data quality and data utilization to inform decision‑making.
  • Coordinate and perform all phases of preventive maintenance on heating, ventilating, electrical, life safety and other building‑related equipment.
  • Operate, monitor and schedule building automation using BAS to ensure maximum efficiency and occupant comfort.
  • Perform daily monitoring, testing and operation of boilers and related equipment.
  • Plan and direct the staffing, scheduling, inventory, cleaning and maintenance of their assigned building and grounds.
  • Coordinate and assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classes, conferences, events, etc. and develop alternate cleaning schedules to cover for vacancies internally.
  • Monitor state of building to detect and anticipate issues and problems that may arise and take corrective action.
  • Submit work orders to correct building mechanical, structural, life safety and support conditions.
  • Requisition, receive and account for equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels.
  • Coordinate building snow removal and deicing activities to ensure student, staff and public safety. Care for lawns and shrubs; clean sidewalks and driveways.
  • Help develop, coordinate and perform summer cleaning activities including summer school and deep cleaning.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms; dust, wipe furniture; sweep, mop, and vacuum floors; wash walls and equipment; empty/clean trash and recycling receptacles; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
  • Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Use, maintain and safely operate assigned power equipment and hand tools; buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
  • Lock and unlock assigned buildings: secure building when facilities are not in use, check for unlocked doors and windows, report unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis; wash accessible interior and exterior windows; clean blinds; launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
  • Maintain clean and organized storage areas for tools, cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Take classes as required in cleaning methods and techniques, new products, First Aid, CPR, and working relationships.
  • Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
