About the Role

Major Projects Project Manager serves as a vital contributor within the Building Solutions North America business at Johnson Controls, leading significant HVAC Controls construction projects in the Indiana market and at customer sites on a daily basis. These projects, valued at $5M or more, require a skilled construction professional capable of managing the complexities associated with large construction undertakings.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure the profitable execution of assigned BAS Complex Projects, collaborating with Owner and contractor sales managers, branch installation managers, and other teams to provide early sales support activities in the TAS and development process.
  • Provide early sales support activities in the TAS and development process, offering insights on strategy, vendor/partner selection, scope enhancements, value engineering, risk assessment, and more.
  • Ensure accuracy, timeliness, billing, budget adherence, and scope compliance of assigned projects while maintaining positive cash flow and actively pursuing change orders.
  • Maintain compliance with state, local, and federal legal requirements, and uphold the highest ethical standards.
  • Adhere to safety standards for all Johnson Controls staff and subcontractors, following established project management procedures that balance customer satisfaction with project financial outcomes.
  • Serve as primary internal leader for execution teams on assigned projects, providing direction to various internal and external teams as needed for successful equipment project execution.
  • Develop and execute project schedules according to plan, coordinating with Project Engineers and System Application Engineers.
  • Evaluate the contractual scope of work and address impact of client‑issued bulletins, field directives, and scheduling changes to support timely and cost‑effective delivery.
  • Seek additional work through change orders, prepare cost estimates, proposals, and negotiate final settlement prices and customer acceptance.
  • Manage company technical resources and subcontractors to control costs, billings, and collections, maintaining profitability and positive cash flow.
  • Review and interpret contract Terms and Conditions, analyze financial reporting systems and project schedules to proactively address potential issues.
  • Communicate project progress, issues, and financial statuses to management as required.
  • Manage risk, establish project recovery plans, resolve disputes with minimal escalation, and prepare and issue subcontracts.
  • Ensure project construction compliance with specifications, local codes, and installation techniques, managing selection, ordering, and delivery schedule of materials.
  • Develop and maintain strong long‑term relationships with customers, consultants, prime contractors, and subcontractors, attending job progress meetings.
  • Coordinate with HVAC Sales & Operations Managers, Construction Management Services, HVAC Installation Manager, Systems Team Leader, Service Operations Manager, and Branch Mechanical Project Team Leader for resource allocation.
  • Ensure engineering and commissioning performed by the field team aligns with established standards and facilitate the escalation of product‑related issues.
  • Assist Area Management Team and/or sales in project development efforts and coordinate customer training requirements.
  • For bundled projects, interact with and direct Truck Based teams assigned to projects under control.
  • Perform early audit sales support activities, including vendor/partner selection, scope enhancements, value engineering, risk assessment, cost estimating, project scheduling, and project management of assigned projects.
  • Develop and maintain Microsoft Project schedules, travelling up to 25% into surrounding markets.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of direct project management experience in the Building Construction Industry.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical material to a non‑technical audience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Project, financial accounting systems, MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project), Adobe Writer, Visio, and basic Windows environment.
