Overview
The Village of Arlington Heights is seeking a detail-oriented Zoning Permit Review Technician to join our Planning & Community Development Department. This position plays a key role in supporting the Village’s development review process by ensuring zoning-related permits and applications are reviewed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with Village regulations. The Zoning Permit Review Technician provides guidance in person, by phone, and via email, clearly explaining zoning regulations and Village procedures in a customer-focused manner.
Responsibilities- Conduct technical zoning reviews for a wide range of residential and commercial projects, including additions, new single-family homes, accessory structures, and signage, evaluating compliance with zoning requirements such as setbacks, lot coverage, floor area, and impervious surface coverage, as well as the Village’s Sign Code.
- Maintain accurate records, assist with permitting and licensing software administration, and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
- Conduct limited field research related to permits, perform zoning-related research and special projects, and provide general administrative support to the team.
- Excellent customer service skills; ability to read and interpret zoning regulations and construction drawings; and strong attention to detail.
- Experience with permitting or zoning review is preferred. Candidates should have at least three years of related experience.
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required, with some college coursework preferred—ideally in planning, architecture, construction, engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, GIS, permitting software and electronic plan review tools; experience with Bluebeam Revu is a plus.
The anticipated hiring range is $71,472 – $75,478, with a full salary range of $71,472 – $96,485. The Zoning Permit Review Technician will work a 37.5-hour work week, Monday – Friday and will be offered a diverse and competitive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, paid vacation, opportunities for professional development, and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund pension plan.
