Technician II - General Safety – Arlington Heights, Illinois

Intertek is actively seeking a Technician II to join our Electrical team in Arlington Heights, Illinois. This role involves providing technical support for engineering staff, performing electrical/performance testing on a variety of products, writing reports, and communicating with clients.

What you’ll do
  • Read test methods and specifications for EUT (equipment under test).
  • Read and understand schematics and manufacturing instructions.
  • Identify and locate test instruments and equipment required.
  • Set up and operate EUT, perform and document simple repairs as needed.
  • Perform testing in accordance with standards (input rating, normal temperature, leakage current, dielectric, grounding impedance, stability, mechanical hazard, flammability, abnormal, fault assurance, rain, IP, etc).
  • Develop and set up test plans.
  • Operate test equipment including spectrum analyzer, oscilloscope, multimeter, dielectric strength tester, ground continuity tester, digital multimeter, surge generator, over‑voltage tester, environmental chamber, articulated probes; build and calibrate test fixtures.
  • Follow sample handling procedures and verify sample log in/out.
  • Move equipment and package samples for shipment.
  • Maintain equipment and facilities.
  • Perform basic analysis of test data and routine calculations.
  • Wiring to identify and connect complex branch circuit connections (single phase, split phase, three‑phase, Delta and Y).
  • Make recommendations regarding technical decisions on test standards.
  • Communicate with clients and management.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of electrical, mechanical, and/or hands‑on equipment experience.
  • Understanding of U.S., Canada, and international product safety standards (e.g., ANSI, IES, CIE, NEMA, UL/CSA).
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable driving record.
  • Basic shop equipment and hand tool proficiency.
  • Ability to review, understand, and convey technical information effectively.
  • Ability to apply common‑sense to carry out simple instructions.
  • Ability to handle standardized situations with minimal variables.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, multi‑tasking environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Preferred Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a technical field.
  • Previous experience in a nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL).
  • 2+ years of electrical experience.
