This job posting describes the Chief Engineer role and its responsibilities within an enterprise facility environment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide operational leadership for the engineering team and ensure machinery and systems operate safely, efficiently, and cost‑effectively with 100% uptime through reliability‑based maintenance practices.
  • Implement equipment inspection and monitoring programs, define maintenance best practices, and continually evaluate operations to maximize performance.
  • Supervise engineers and maintenance staff, manage contractor activities, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain infrastructure documentation.
  • Lead a high‑performing team while expanding capabilities through exposure to complex facility systems.
  • Monitor operation and maintenance of refrigeration, water cooling, air conditioning equipment, boilers, heating, ventilating systems, pumps, valves, piping, and other mechanical and electrical equipment; oversee HVAC repair and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Supervise and manage staff including hiring, training, development, and maintaining a professional standard across the team.
  • Ensure adequate inventory of tools and supplies by preparing purchase orders and monitoring stock levels and equipment conditions.
  • Identify safety hazards, implement remediation, and administer safety training programs while ensuring compliance with regulatory laws and guidelines.
  • Oversee contractor activities, ensure understanding of the Critical Facility Work Authorization (CFWA) process, and maintain up‑to‑date drawings and regulatory records.
Required qualifications
  • 7+ years of facilities‑related work experience with 5+ years in a leadership/managerial capacity.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of maintenance processes with understanding of construction planning and execution.
  • Exposure to HVAC, fluid handling/pumping, fluid filtering, mechanical systems, welding, and electrical systems engineering and operation.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Office and CMMS systems; demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven track record of excellent internal and external customer service.
Preferred qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in an Engineering discipline.
  • Universal Technician certification for CFCs (or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment).
  • Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent.
Work Location, Schedule, and Assignment Expectations

Your primary work location is in Arlington, VA, with responsibilities that may include neighboring sites in Fairfax and Herndon, VA. You must respond to alarms, service requests, and other duties at any portfolio location as needed. With advance notice, schedules may be adjusted based on operational or staffing needs. Employees are expected to report to assigned locations and complete all work as directed.

This position does not provide visa sponsorship. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Compensation and Location

Estimated compensation for this position:  –  USD per year. This range is an estimate; final compensation is determined by qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations.
